Tampa Bay Rays vs Baltimore Orioles Baseball Lines Preview

When a division race proves to be a tight one, it is often the team that wants it the most that finds their way to the top. In the AL East, it appears that none of the 5 times are quite ready to step up and take the bull by the horns. That included the Tampa Bay Rays, who will head to Baltimore to face the Orioles in a 3-game series beginning on Friday. Let’s review the trends, MLB odds, and expected moves for this game.

The Tampa Bay Rays (24-24) came into the season with a bunch of rookies and little hope of making much noise in the AL East, but for a couple of glorious days last week, they found themselves atop the division. That said, this is not a division that has really lent itself to spectacular play, so there is every chance that all 5 teams may find their way to the top for spells during the course of the season. When the Rays did make it to the top, it was almost as if they suddenly realized that they didn’t believe they belonged, as they then went ahead and lost the next 5 games in a row. They need to find a way to bounce back and get on track against a lackluster Baltimore Orioles team. Nathan Karns (3-2, 3.71 ERA) will get the start for Tampa on Friday.  Karns had a 2-game win streak snapped when he took the loss in his last start.

The Baltimore Orioles (21-24) had hoped that they could use a home double-header against the White Sox on Thursday as a launching pad for an assault on first place in the division. Things are not going according to plan, though, as they have just gone down 3-2 in the opening game of that double header. Given the way things have gone for Baltimore this season, they will likely bounce back to win game 2 and maintain the .500 style of ball that has been the M.O. for the past few weeks. Despite their inability to get on a hot streak, they still only find themselves 2.5 games back of the division leading Yankees. Miguel Gonzalez (5-3, 3.83 ERA) is scheduled to start for the O’s on Friday. He was less than stellar in his last start versus the Marlins, who tagged him for 10 hits in 4.1 innings.

Key Betting Trends

Tampa Bay Rays

  • Tampa Bay is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games

Baltimore Orioles

  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Baltimore’s last 5 games
  • Baltimore is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games at home
  • The total has gone UNDER in 11 of Baltimore’s last 15 games at home
  • Baltimore is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing Chi White Sox

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets

Gonzalez has had a pair of starts against the Tampa Bay Rays this season and has only given up a single earned run against them. That bodes well for the Orioles, who I think will get the win here.
