Other than the playoffs, there is no part of the baseball exciting than where we are right now. The Wild Card has helped make it this way, and what is happening in the American League right now makes for must see baseball. Perhaps the best series this coming weekend sees the Texas Rangers head west to face the LA Angels in a 3-game serious that has big Wild Card implications. Game 1 of the series will go on Friday with LA favorite on MLB lines.

One of the most improbable charges taking place in the second half of the season is that of the Texas Rangers (70-62). They looked to be well out of things at the trade deadline, but made a couple of big moves that seemed to make a huge difference. They went 18-10 in the month of August, and have kept things rolling by winning their first two games this month. That great run has vaulted them into the final Wild Card spot in the AL, but even more interestingly, it now leaves them just 2 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West. Houston is on a bit of a slide at the moment, and it would not be a huge surprise to see those positions switched by the time the weekend comes to a close. The remaining schedule for Texas is fairly favorable, and includes 7 games against Houston that might well decide the division. Martin Perez (2-3, 5.15 ERA) will get the start for Texas on Friday. The Angels (67-66) are heading in the opposite direction of the Rangers, and will need to make a pretty speedy U-turn if they hope to stay alive in the Wild Card race. Back to back wins against the Oakland A’s has certainly helped their cause, whilst also bringing an end to a stretch of games where they went 2-9. The upshot of it all is that they are now 3.5 games back of the Rangers for that final spot, so the importance of this series is not lost on anyone. The Angels scored 20 runs in their 3 games against Oakland, and saw Mike Trout perhaps get ready to bust out of a slump that saw him hit just .227 in the month of August. Garrett Richards (12-10, 3.80 ERA) will start, and will need to improve on the single win he has picked up in his last 5 starts.
