It has long been said that money can’t buy you a championship, but that certainly doesn’t stop some teams from continually trying to test the theory. The Los Angeles Dodgers have the highest payroll of any team in the MLB, and are currently playing that way. The Milwaukee Brewers are down near the middle of the pack, but the way they are playing this year would suggest that they are not getting value for money. These two teams meet in the final game of a 4-game set in Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon with the Dodgers as favorites on MLB odds.

The LA Dodgers (17-9) have powered their way to the top of the NL West, scoring 126 runs and holding a +39 run differential. They have also been breaking records, as their 35 total home runs through the first 22 games of the season is a new franchise high total. It would be easy to sit and say at this point that their massive $270 plus million payroll was paying dividends, but this is a long season where things can go off the rails pretty quickly. Where the Dodgers would really love to improve is in their play on the road. They are 3 games under .500 right now, but have put together a staggering 13-2 record at home to make those road losses seem a little meaningless. Carlos Frias will get the start for the Dodgers on Thursday afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers (8-19) have been the butt of many jokes to this point in the season, and are an easy target given that they have the worst record in baseball. That is a label that they may soon shake off, though, as they seem to be turning things around in the second full month of the season. April was a bit of a nightmare, but they started May by taking 3 of 4 from the Cubs on the road, and then splitting the first 2 games of the series with the high flying Dodgers. They have been getting much better starts from their pitching staff, and it appears as though the bats are starting to warm up a little. Whether this is a minor positive blip or a sign of a lasting upswing remains to be seen. Mike Fiers (1-3, 4.74 ERA) will take to the mound for the Brewers, and will be looking to build on his last outing, which was far and away his best of the season.
