As we head into the waning moments of the MLB regular season, we are looking at just a few more things to be decided before the playoffs begin. Most of the uncertainty rests on the American League side, as it looks as though the 5 spots in the NL have been filled. It’s now all just about jockeying for position. The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates have all but booked their postseason tickets, and will finish up a 4-game series in the Steel City on Thursday where the Pirates are MLB betting favorites to win the match.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Betting Preview

Date: Thursday, September 17, 2015 Time: 12:35PM Venue: PNC Park Opening Line: Pittsburgh -132     The Pirates (87-57) still have it all to play for, as they have a legitimate shot at running down the Cardinals for the NL Central division title. They are just 3 games back at the moment, and still have a series against the Cardinals to come before the season draws to a close. Before all that happens, though, they still have to successfully navigate this series, and then head to LA to face a Dodgers team that doesn’t lose at home very often. As if that weren’t bad enough, they also have one more series with the Cubs, all of which would lead you to believe that winning the division is going to be a very tough ask. The Pirates are playing well, though, and have put together a solid 7-3 record over their past 10 games. Continue winning at that pace, and who knows how this will all play out. Charlie Morton (9-7, 4.02 ERA) will start for the Pirates on Thursday. It’s looking as though the Cubs (83-61) are going to have to be content with a Wild card spot, as they are 7 games back of St. Louis in the Central. Had you asked the Cubs at the start of the season if they would take that spot, you can bet that they would have very willingly accepted it. This is a young team that has surprised a lot of people this year, and you get the sense that they are only going to get better over the next couple of seasons. They are also looking at a number of players who may get their hands on awards at the season’s end, with Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young potentially making their way to Wrigley Field. Kris Bryant and Jake Arrieta have certainly done enough to be legitimate contenders for those awards. Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 4.08 ERA) will start for the Cubs.

These two teams split the first two games of the series, and I expect it to be tight all the way through. Giving a slight edge to the Cubs in this one.
