Here’s a Closer Look At The Top MLB Expert Picks Of The Week
Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies, Tuesday, Aug. 30
I am never a fan of picking aces because their value tends to drag down the betting value on their teams, but in the case of Max Scherzer (14-7, 2.92 ERA), I have to make an exception. This guy has been an absolute beast is coming off arguably his best performance of the season, tossing eight scoreless innings and striking out 10 against Baltimore’s hot offense. The right-hander, who owns the best WHIP in the MLB for starting pitchers, will be getting a favorable matchup against Jerad Heickhoff (9-12, 3.87 ERA) and the Phillies in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Eickhoff has put together four back-to-back quality starts ahead of this clash, but the Philadelphia Phillies offense is coming off a cold week where it scored just 16 total runs in their five games, while the team only has two players placed comfortably above the .322 OBP of an average National Leaguer. Trusting this unit for run support is therefore risky, especially since it will be facing the best strikeout machine in the league. With that, Scherzer and the Nats should be due for the win in this game, maybe even with the run line value if Washington’s offense lights it up.
New York Yankees at Kansas City Royals, Wednesday, Aug. 31
Ian Kennedy is on fire, and so are the Royals. The veteran pitcher has collected three straight winning decisions in his last three starts while surrendering only four earned runs over 32.1 innings of work in August. The Royals, meanwhile, are 12-2 in their last 14 games, playing solid on both sides of the baseball, which should mean good value when Kennedy takes to the mound on Wednesday. Of course, Luis Cessa has been quietly putting up a strong rookie season and he could be a spoilsport in this game, but knowing Kennedy and his abilities, we believe the Royals will outpitch the Yankees for the win here.
Houston Astros at Oakland Athletics, Wednesday, Aug. 31
Pick: UNDER 8.5 Total
The Oakland Athletics have been a typical poor offensive team this season and the experts believe that the UNDER could be in strong play when they Mike Fiers and the Astros on Wednesday. Fiers hasn’t been the steadiest of starters, but he had a solid shut-down performance against the dangerous Orioles offense in a 12-2 Houston win one weekend ago and then followed it with a strong 6-inning show in the win over Tampa Bay mid last week. Against an Oakland team that has played UNDER the total in 10 of their last 12 games entering Monday, another UNDER could be in the offing here. FYI, the Astros’ pitching staff has been solid this season, ranking 9th in the MLB with a 3.99 team ERA. The A’s have struggled pitching-wise, but are coming off a week where they only gave up 12 total runs in their six games.
Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies, Saturday, Sept. 3
OVER 9.5 Runs
The Diamondbacks have generally been poor in pitching, giving up 399 total runs in their last fifty-nine games (6.8 runs per game), and including 45 allowed runs in 7 seven games last week. Meanwhile, Colorado has been MLB’s highest-scoring offense since the All-Star break while the Rockies’ pitching staff has been struggling, allowing 68 runs in their last twelve games. Throw in the additional fact that Colorado’s Jon Gray (8-6, 4.61 ERA) and Archie Bradley (5-8, 4.95 ERA) will be the iffy pitchers starting in this Saturday night game, you have all the reasons to be on the lookout for a high-scoring encounter between the Backs and Rockies on Saturday.
