Some teams carry the weight of being the favorite with relative ease, while others seem to struggle under the pressure. The San Francisco Giants and the Houston Astros both appear to be slipping into the latter category, as they are both in a run of form that could have a negative effect on their chances of playing in the postseason. They will play the second game of a 2-game series by the Bay on Wednesday afternoon with the Giants favorites on betting lines.

The Giants (59-52) have had to play the entire season with a huge target on their backs, which is just one of the prices you have to pay as the defending champion. Every team seems to raise their level of play when the champs show up on the schedule, which is why it is so tough to repeat. San Francisco have had injury troubles, especially in the starting pitcher position, all year long but they seem to have addressed that with some savvy moves at the deadline.
It doesn’t seem to have helped, though, as they are just 3-6 since the beginning of August. They are coming into this one on a 4-game losing skid, but will be glad to get back home after a horrific road trip. Chris Heston (11-6, 3.48 ERA) will be the man on the mound for the Giants, who need to start winning in order to close the Wild Card gap.
Back at the end of July, the Houston Astros (61-52) swept the LA Angels to take control of the AL West. They followed that up by taking 2 of 3 from the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading everyone to believe that they were about to open up and take total control of the division. It didn’t quite turn out that way, though, as they went on to drop 6 of the next 7 games. The lead atop the division in now just a single game, and it is only that because the Angels are playing pretty bad ball right now, too. The Astros have a pretty tough schedule to look forward to in the coming weeks, and they are going to have to find a way to break out of this slump if they still hope to be playing in October. Scott Feldman (4-5, 4.45 ERA) will be on the mound for the Astros on Wednesday.

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets
These are a pair of teams in desperate need of a win, which should make this 2-game series fun to watch. This is a tough one to call, but let’s give the Giants the nod due to home field advantage.
