The Wild Card MLB odds have been incredibly tight for quite some time now, but the results from last week have made the picture a little clearer. A few teams have now fallen quite a bit off the pace and will need a strong week or two in order to get back into it. The Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays are two of those teams, and they meet in a crucial series in Baltimore, with game 2 of 3 set for Tuesday night.

If you want the definition of a disastrous week in baseball, then simply look at what the Baltimore Orioles (63-67) did last week. They started out by losing 3 of 4 to the Kansas City Royals, and then followed that up by being swept by the Texas Rangers. It was the latter series that was particularly damaging, as Texas are the team that they need to catch for the final Wild Card spot. The hole for the Orioles is now pretty deep, as they are 5.5 games back of that final spot, and have a number of teams now ahead of them. It’s fair to say that a loss in this series to the Rays might well kill off their playoff challenge, if that hasn’t happened already. They are going to have to find some way to bring the bats back to life, as they were essentially silenced all last week. Chris Tillman (9-9, 4.58 ERA) will try to snap a 2-game losing streak when he takes to the mound on Tuesday.
The Tampa Bay Rays (64-66) also had a week to forget, as they stumbled to a 2-4 record and a pair of series losses to the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals. They also lost ground in the Wild Card race, and are now 4.5 games back of the Texas Rangers for the final spot. The Rays were able to avoid the sweep in both series by winning the final game of each, so things could have been a whole lot worse for them heading into this series. Given how well the Rangers are playing at the moment, the rays simply cannot afford to have another sub-par week if they are to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Drew Smyly (1-2, 3.82 ERA) will make just his 6th start of the season for the Rays, who have managed to win 4 of those 6 games.
Key Betting Trends
- Tampa Bay is 2-5-1 SU in its last 8 games
- Tampa Bay is 4-7-1 SU in its last 12 games on the road
- Tampa Bay is 3-5-1 SU in its last 9 games when playing Baltimore
- Tampa Bay is 2-3-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing on the road against Baltimore
- Baltimore is 0-4-1 SU in its last 5 games
- Baltimore is 0-4-1 SU in its last 5 games at home
- Baltimore is 2-3-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing Tampa Bay
It’s desperation time for both of these teams, and there really is very little separating them. Baltimore has been pretty good at home this year, and that home field edge may just be enough to get them through this game and series.
