There is nothing quite like seeing two very good teams go toe to toe in divisional MLB odds, and we have a beauty lined up for Thursday night, as the Pittsburgh Pirates finish up a 3-game series against the Cardinals in St. Louis. The NL Central is arguably the best division in baseball, so expect this series to be as competitive as it gets.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs St. Louis Cardinals MLB Game PreviewDate/Time: Thursday, August 13th, 7:15 PMVenue: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MOTV: ROOT SPORTS, MLBNRadio: KDKA-FM 93.7Opening Line: St. Louis -115 This must be an incredibly frustrating division for the other teams to play in, as the St. Louis Cardinals just continue to accumulate wins at a ridiculous pace. They took the first game in this series to open up a 6-game lead on the Pirates, with time beginning to become a factor in this division title race. That win saw the Cardinals go to 7-3 in their last 10 games, which is a pace that they have essentially been setting all season long. They had a minor blip in the final week or so of the first half, but it appears as though the break did them a world of good. A win in this series won’t clinch them the division, but it would go a long way towards making them uncatchable. Lance Lynn (9-6, 2.76 ERA) comes into this one on the heels of a 6 inning shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers.Even if the Pirates (65-45) were to lose this series, hey would still find themselves in a pretty comfortable spot in regard their playoff situation. While the division appears to be slipping away, they still hold a very solid 6-game lead over the chasing pack in the Wild Card. Their closest rival right now is their division foes, the Chicago Cubs, who are on a bit of a hot tear at the moment. The good news for Pittsburgh is that their offense is on fire right now, but that is tempered somewhat by the fact that they are also giving up more runs than they should. At the end of the day, though, the Pirates are in a decent run of form, and should be more that good enough to land a spot in the postseason. Francisco Liriano (7-6, 3.13 ERA) will be on the mound for the Pirates, who have won the last 7 games that he has started.
