It is at this stage of the year where you really start to find out exactly what you team is made of. Teams will either rise to the occasion or buckle under the pressure of a playoff race. Two teams heading in opposite directions are the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, and they will meet on Tuesday night in New York as part of a 3-game series with MLB lines favoring the Yankees.

It is fair to say at this stage that the season is over for the Baltimore Orioles (65-71). They have slipped to 6.5 games off the pace in the Wild Card, and have far too many teams ahead of them to make some sort of miraculous recovery a possibility. If truth be told, the Orioles were pretty much already done heading into last week’s games, but what happened there proved to be the final nail in the coffin.

Dropping 2 of 3 at home to the Tampa Bay Rays was followed up by losing 2 of 3 on the road to the Blue Jays. The Orioles are now just 2-8 in their last 10 games, and have a remaining schedule that features a lot of teams still very much in the playoff picture. Kevin Gausman (2-6, 4.59 ERA) will get the start for the Orioles. Gausman has gone winless in his last 6 starts.

It was another solid week for the New York Yankees (76-59) last week, but also one where they failed to make up any ground on the AL East leading Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees won back to back series against the Red Sox and Rays, but still find themselves sitting a game and a half back of their rivals to the north. While it will likely not be what decides the division, the 4-game series between the Yankees and Blue Jays that is coming later this week is one that could very much swing the pendulum in the favor of whoever wins the series. The one thing that the Yankees cannot afford to do here is look ahead to the Jays series. Any sort of slip up against the O’s could see them facing Toronto with an even larger gap to close. Masahiro Tanaka (11-6, 3.73 ERA) will be looking for his third straight win when he takes the mound on Tuesday.

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets

As mentioned earlier, the Yankees cannot afford to look beyond this series, and I really don’t see that happening. This looks like a bit of a lopsided pitching match-up, and is one that should allow the Yankees to get the win.
