Most MLB odds fans, even those whose teams are currently playing very well, would admit that it’s far too early in the season to tell if a team is for real or not. The perfect example of that would be the New York Yankees, who are building a solid lead in the AL East despite the fact that everyone had them pegged as being favorites to finish at or near the bottom. Thy will play the third in a 4-game series versus the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon in New York.

The knock on the Yankees (18-11) heading into the season was that their starting rotation simply wasn’t good enough, and that their veteran line-up was getting a little too long in the tooth. The major question mark in the line-up was Alex Rodriguez, who many believed would be a total failure after 2 years out of the game through suspension. The 39-year old has been the key to the success for the Yankees this season, hitting .245 with 7 HR and 18 RBI in the DH spot. He just passed Willie Mays with his 661st home run against the Orioles on Tuesday night, leading the Yankees to yet another win. Chase Whitley (1-0, 0.75 ERA) will get the start for New York on Saturday, and will be looking to build on his excellent start to the season so far. Whitley has been almost unhittable in his 2 starts to this point.

It’s now officially fair to say that the Orioles (12-14) are in a slump, as they have now lost 3 games in a row, all to teams out of New York. In fairness to the O’s, it has been a strange sort of season for them to this point, with all the events in the city no doubt serving as a distraction. You can’t play in an empty stadium and have home games on the road without it having some sort of effect on your confidence. It is going to be interesting to see how this team rebounds from all of this. The good news is that this is a tight division so far, and the Orioles are only 4.5 games out of first place right now. Wei-Yin Chen (0-1, 2.83 ERA) will get the start, and will hope to get his first win of the season. Chen has been pretty good through his first 5 starts, boasting a 1.15 WHIP.

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets

This looks like being a very good pitching match-up, and one that may result in a low-scoring affair. The Yankees have done a great job at getting timely hits so far this season, and that may well be the difference in this one.
