The home team is unbeaten in the Eastern Conference first-round matchup between the No. 1 Toronto Raptors and No. 8 Washington Wizards. Will that trend continue Wednesday in Game 5?  The Raptors, who tied for the most regular-season home wins, are solid NBA odds favorites.

Why Bet on Washington’s NBA Odds?

If the Wizards play like they did at home in the past two games, they can win this one. If they play defense like they did in the first two, they are toast.

Washington evened things up with a 106-98 win Sunday even though All-Star guard Bradley Beal fouled out with around five minutes left. It’s the first time all season that Beal has fouled out of a game. The sixth foul was questionable and Beal was fuming afterward, but he managed to avoid a technical or the risk of further punishment from the league. He finished with 31 points and five rebounds. The Wizards didn’t hang their heads when he left — instead, they looked fired up as they closed the game on a 14-6 run.

John Wall also was very good in Game 4 with 27 points with 14 assists, six rebounds and three steals in 44 minutes. He made 10-of-24 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws, and came up huge after Bradley Beal fouled out. Wall said he sprained his right ankle during the fourth quarter but not only played through it but went on to score eight of the Wizards’ final 14 points. He’ll obviously play in Game 5. The All-Star point guard, playing in only his eighth game after undergoing knee surgery earlier this season, made or assisted on the final seven Wizards field goals and scored or assisted on 18 of Washington’s final 23 points.

“That’s John Wall,” center Marcin Gortat said. “I am glad he’s healthy. He is spoon-feeding me. I am getting fat now. Listen, if he plays the right way, he is the best point guard in the league. If he looks for his teammates and looks for the open possession where he can attack, he is the best.”

Gortat finished Game 4 with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, six rebounds, one assist and one steal in 28 minutes of action. Gortat grabbed his lower back after absorbing some contact in the second quarter, but it didn’t slow him down.

Washington is trying to become the sixth number eight seed in NBA history to defeat the number one seed. Only three of the previous five instances occurred in seven-game series (Golden State over Dallas-2007, Memphis over San Antonio-2011 and Philadelphia over Chicago-2012).

Are the Raptors a safe bet in Game 5?

The Raptors have to feel good going back home, where they totaled 244 points in the first two games. But they didn’t look good in D.C. After Beal fouled out of Game 4, Wall outscored the Raptors 8-6 while helping hold stars DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry to four points during the last five minutes of the game.

In the first three games of the series, the Raptors initiated only 37 isolation possessions — among the fewest in the playoff field. In Game 4, they tallied 20 isolation possessions. The team is playing too much hero ball. All-Stars DeRozan (35 points, 10/29 FGs) and Lowry (19 points, 7/15 FGs) dominated the field goal attempts in Game 4; no other Raptor attempted more than seven shots. In fact, the two guards combined to attempt more shots than the rest of their teammates in Sunday’s Game 4 loss at Washington. DeRozan and Lowry combined to attempt more than 50 percent of Toronto’s total field goal attempts seven times in 2016-17, with a 5-2 record. But that never happened in the 2017 postseason, and it didn’t happen during the 2017-18 regular season.

Jonas Valanciunas played only 15 minutes on Sunday, scoring 11 points with three rebounds and one block. JV made 4-of-6 field goals and 3-of-3 free throws, but after playing 23 minutes in each of the first three games in this series, his role was eroded by backup Jakob Poeltl. Even after Poeltl fouled out late in the game, Pascal Siakam checked in with Serge Ibaka shifting to center.

OG Anunoby played through a right ankle injury to finish Sunday’s Game 4 defeat with four points on 2-of-3 shooting, two steals, one rebound and one assist in 22 minutes. Coach Dwane Casey said that Anunoby (ankle) was able to practice on Tuesday and is day-to-day going forward. If OG is unable to play in Game 5 on Wednesday, C.J. Miles and Pascal Siakam will get additional minutes.

Casey said that Fred VanVleet (shoulder) was able to practice Tuesday and is day-to-day. VanVleet is officially listed as doubtful on the injury report, meaning it’s unlikely he will be cleared to play – he hasn’t yet in the series. If VanVleet is ruled out for Game 5, Delon Wright would again be asked to handle significant minutes. Wright is averaging 10.5 points, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals in 24.6 minutes over the first four games of this series.
