Many NBA experts thought the Philadelphia 76ers would beat the Boston Celtics in their Eastern Conference semifinal. Barring a historic rally by Philly, which is down 3-0, those experts will be wrong. Boston tries for the sweep on Monday but is a MyBookie underdog in the NBA odds for Game 4.

Why Bet on Boston’s NBA Odds?

The Celtics have been an underdog in all three games yet lead 3-0. Why wouldn’t you bet them? They prevailed in Game 3, 101-98 in overtime to all but end this series. Rookie Jayson Tatum scored 24 points with five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one 3-pointer in 41 minutes. He was already the youngest player ever to score 20-plus points in four straight playoff games and now passed Larry Bird for most consecutive 20-plus scoring games by a Celtics rookie with Tatum’s fifth. By the way, the 76ers could have drafted him No. 1 overall last summer but chose Markelle Fultz instead.

Terry Rozier made another big impact in the win Saturday, scoring 18 points with seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, two 3-pointers and no turnovers. That’s no turnovers for two straight games, which is pretty amazing for someone who handles the ball so much. His two steals were arguably the biggest two of the game, especially at the end of regulation after the 76ers botched a play that led to the Celtics lead before Marco Belinelli’s shot at the regulation buzzer.

Al Horford scored 13 points with six rebounds, two assists, two steals, three blocks and two turnovers. He was the hero at the end of the game with a layup off an inbounds play with 5.5 seconds left to give the Celtics a one-point lead in OT, and then he stole the ball on a bounce pass to Joel Embiid to lead to two more made free throws to give the Celtics a three-point lead with three seconds left.

Boston coach Brad Stevens has become renowned for his after-timeout playcalls, particularly in anticipating how the opposition will defend a certain action.  Certainly worked in Horford’s case, who called his coach a “genius.” This postseason, the Celtics have run a league-high 138 after-timeout possessions. The Celtics are averaging 1.029 points per play, the fifth-best mark among the 16 playoff teams. The Celtics are averaging 0.984 points per play overall this postseason, ranking eighth overall.

Jaylen Brown scored 16 points with nine rebounds, one steal, two blocks and three 3-pointers in 29 minutes in Game 3.  Brown will still have restrictions for Game 4. Brown, coming off a hamstring injury, played 26 of his 29 minutes in Game 3 before overtime, so that’s probably his limit.

Why Bet on Philadelphia’s NBA Odds?

Are the 76ers a safe bet in Game 4 vs. Celtics?

No team has ever come back from an 0-3 hole in NBA history. As Tatum, the No. 3 pick in the draft, stars for Boston, Markelle Fultz, whom Philadelphia selected No. 1, has yet to see the court and has been a healthy DNP for five straight games. The Sixers sent a future first-round pick to Boston in order to swap spots.

The 76ers lost a winnable Game 3 because of what Joel Embiid labeled “dumb mistakes” in crunch time. The first error was a turnover on a JJ Redick pass with eight seconds to play in the fourth quarter and the score tied. Redick’s pass was thrown without either Ben Simmons or Embiid in position to receive it, and it ended up giving the Celtics a fast-break layup with 1.7 seconds to play. Marco Belinelli bailed out the Sixers with a baseline jumper at the buzzer to tie the game. Then a few miscues in the final 20 seconds of overtime hurt Philadelphia’s chances to win.

Embiid scored 22 points with 19 rebounds, two assists, one steal, one block and three turnovers in 41 minutes. Ben Simmons scored 16 points with eight rebounds, eight assists, one steal, two blocks and four turnovers in 43 minutes. Simmons hasn’t been able to take advantage of mismatches and the defense collapsing on him late has limited him. Simmons also had a wide-open missed dunk in the fourth quarter.

JJ Redick had 18 points and recorded two rebounds and two assists in 41 minutes during Game 3. Only seven players have made more three-pointers than Redick’s 23 this postseason. Belinelli scored 12 points off the bench as he also tallied four rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes of play. He extended his career-best postseason double-figure scoring streak to eight consecutive games.

Philadelphia out-rebounded Boston 50-49 in Game 3. The 76ers have out-rebounded their opponent in each of their eight games this postseason, setting a new franchise record for consecutive such games in a single playoff run. The Sixers have now recorded 50-plus rebounds in a league-leading four games this postseason. Philadelphia’s 49.3 rebounds per game lead all teams in the 2018 playoffs.

Boston pretty much knows it’s playing with house money here so I think the 76ers roll to a win and cover the NBA odds.
