NBA Season Series

Boston won in Dallas 119-110 on Jan. 22. Jayson Tatum had 38 points and 11 rebounds, and Jaylen Brown scored 35 points. Tatum and Brown combined to go 24 of 43 from the field while Mavs stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were 21 of 50. Doncic didn’t hit his first 3-pointer until the fourth quarter and finished 2 of 8 from beyond the arc. Doncic had a triple-double but needed 30 shots for 33 points with 18 rebounds and 13 assists. Irving scored 23. Grant Williams faced the Celtics for the first time since an offseason trade from the team that drafted him in the first round in 2019. Williams scored just two points in 18 minutes. The Mavericks are 40-45 (.471) all-time against the Celtics (24-19 at home, 16-26 on the road).

Why Bet on Dallas?

Dallas ended a two-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 136-125 win in Toronto. Luka Doncic had 30 points, 16 assists and 11 rebounds on his 25th birthday for his 11th triple-double of the season. Doncic, the NBA’s leading scorer, is the first player in league history to record a 30-point triple-double on his birthday. He has scored 25 or more points in nine straight games, topping 40 twice in that stretch. Doncic shot 11 for 23, going just 1 of 8 from 3-point range.

After falling behind, 67-66, at intermission, the Mavs got overly aggressive in the third quarter when they outscored the Raptors 40-25 to take a 106-92 led into the fourth quarter. This became one of the brightest moments by Doncic, who scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds, distributed six assists and picked up two steals in the third quarter. For the 10 time in his career, Luka recorded a triple-double with at least 30 points and 15 assists. Only Oscar Robertson has more career triple-doubles with 30 points and 15 assists, as he did it 22 times.

The Mavs’ lead ballooned to as high as 15 points (107-92) when Dante Exum split a pair of free throws at the outset of the fourth quarter. It was the first game for Exum after he missed the previous 13 with bursitis in the right knee. Kyrie Irving, meanwhile, poured in 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter.

“I thought the defense was really good,” Coach Jason Kidd said. “I know we gave up 125 points, but just looking at the deflections, the (seven) steals. I thought we sat down there in the third quarter and turned the water off from them.”

PJ Washington had his best game with Dallas since being traded from Charlotte with 23 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Washington scored 10 of the Mavs’ first 16 points against Toronto.

“I just feel like I was getting more comfortable each and every game,” Washington said. “Obviously, my teammates were doing a good job of finding me tonight, and I was hitting some good shots, so I just kept on taking those looks. For me, it’s just taking open shots and making them and just being aggressive on both ends.”

Daniel Gafford provided a boost off the bench with 13 points (6-of-7 FGs) and seven rebounds against the Raptors. Gafford had played less than 20 minutes in each of his previous three games and only played seven minutes on Tuesday. However, he had to take on a larger role Wednesday with Maxi Kleber sidelined. Gafford split the minutes at center with Dereck Lively II, who had nine points, four rebounds, one assist, two steals and five blocks in 23 minutes as the starter.

Doncic is averaging 29.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 10 career games (5-5 record) against the Celtics, including 32.3 points, 9.5 boards and 7.5 assists in his last eight games against the franchise (since 2019-20). Irving spent two seasons with Boston (2017-19), averaging 24.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 32.6 minutes in 127 games (all starts) with the Celtics while being named an All-Star starter with the franchise in both years (2017-19).

Why Bet on Boston?

Boston won its ninth game in a row Tuesday, 117-99 over Philadelphia. The C’s prevailed despite connecting on just 5-of-22 3-pointers and committing 14 turnovers. But Boston outscored Philadelphia 64-48 in the second half and dominated with a 56-28 rebounding edge.

“We were able to win a different way,” Coach Joe Mazzulla said. “We’ve never said we have to win (shooting 3s). We always take what the defense gives us and we’re one of the best teams doing that. And that’s kind of our offensive philosophy — take the best shot and find the best shot.”

Jayson Tatum had 29 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, two helpers away from recording what would’ve been his first triple-double of the season. Tatum has been on a tear of late as he averaged 27.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game in February.

Jaylen Brown had 31 points and six rebounds. Brown was very efficient, missing just three shots from the field en route to his second consecutive outing with 30 or more points. But Brown averaged only 20.3 points during February. Kristaps Porzingis had 23 points and 12 rebounds. KP was a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe, ensuring that he exceeded 20 points for the second consecutive game. Porziņgis appeared in 134 games (all starts) with the Mavericks over two-and-a-half seasons (2019-21), averaging 20.0 points and 8.8 rebounds.

The C’s outrebounded Philadelphia, 56-28, and are now 31-5 when defeating their opponents on the glass. It was the Celtics’ largest rebounding margin since 12/22/19 vs Charlotte and was just the 4th time since 1990 that the Celtics have been at least +28 on the boards.

Boston and Dallas lead the NBA in 3-point shooting, with the Celtics making 939 3-pointers so far this season and the Mavericks are second with 888 threes. The two teams attempt the highest volume of 3-pointers, with Boston attempting 2,451 and converting at a .382 percentage, the fourth-highest percentage in the league from behind the arc. The Mavericks have the second-highest perimeter attempts with 2,368 attempts at .375-percent shooting.

There are 5 Celtics among the NBA’s top 8 in net rating, including 1. Derrick White (13.1), 2. Porzingis (12.2), 6. Tatum (11.4), 7. Payton Pritchard (11.3) and 8. Sam Hauser (11.0). White owns the second-best plus/minus in the NBA during clutch-time minutes at +75. He is one of only two players in the NBA to compete in at least 80 minutes in the clutch without committing a single turnover.

At 1.212 points per possession, the Celtics have the most efficient offense in NBA history. Entering this season, 1.186 points per possession was the NBA record held by Sacramento in 2023.

NBA Betting Predictions: 2021 Mavericks Vs Celtics Expert Analysis

Dallas is in seventh place in the Western Conference, 3.5 games behind Portland, a half-game in front of San Antonio and 1.5 games in front of Memphis. Now, let’s find out where the best NBA betting value lies in this mid-week matchup so you can bet against their NBA odds.

Dallas Mavericks Looking To Stay In The Playoff Mix

The Mavericks have split their last 10 games evenly. Dallas snapped a two-game skid by subduing Oklahoma City 127-106 on Monday night. Luka Doncic scored a team-high 25 points and outscored the Thunder by 13 in the second half to get the win. Doncic missed Dallas’ previous two games with back soreness on Friday against Indiana and Saturday’s loss to New Orleans with a non-COVID-19 illness. Kristaps Porzingis added 20 points and nine rebounds in the win while Tim Hardaway Jr. chipped in 19 points.

“Second half, I thought we played to our level and our capabilities against a team that’s undermanned, but very well coached, still skilled, hard playing, all those kinds of things,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “We were able to take care of business.”

Dallas averages 112.2 points per game (17th) on 47.1% shooting from the field (11th) and 35.9% from beyond the arc (19th). The Mavericks allow 110.9 points per game defensively (11th) on 46.0 percent shooting from the field (10th) and 37.0% from beyond the arc (17th).

Celtics Looking To Stay in Playoff Contention

The Celtics had their two-game winning streak snapped in Monday’s 115-109 home loss against Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans while playing without all-star guard Jaylen Brown. Jayson Tatum scored a game-high 34 points and Kemba Walker added 23 points, but Boston couldn’t contain Williamson who posted 28 points for New Orleans in the win. The C’s fell in their first home game with fans in attendance since before the start of the pandemic.

“Seeing fans occasionally on the road but not here, I’d say it was pretty emotional for me,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “It signals maybe if we can buckle down and get through it, we can have something close to normal.”

Boston averages 112.3 points per game (16th) on 46.9% shooting from the field (13th) and 37.1% from beyond the arc (13th). The Celtics allow 111.3 points per game defensively (15th) on 46.6 percent shooting from the field (14th) and 37.1% from beyond the arc (19th).

Expert Analysis and Prediction

The Celtics are clearly getting desperate to get their act together. Boston has gone 13-8 at home this season while Dallas is 13-11 on the road. The Mavs have gone an uninspiring 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games as an underdog, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as a road underdog.

On the flip side of the coin, Boston has gone 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games against a team with a winning road record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss. Dallas is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 road dates against the Celtics, but with the spread set at just one point, I like Boston to win and cover – out of sheer desperation, if nothing else.

Season Series

Dallas leads 1-0, winning 113-104 at home on Nov. 24. JJ Barea scored 20 points and tag-teamed with Wesley Matthews on back-to-back 3s to take control in the fourth quarter. Harrison Barnes also had 20 points, rookie Luka Doncic totaled 15 points and matched Barea with eight assists while starting at point guard with Dennis Smith Jr. sidelined by a wrist injury. The Mavericks have now won seven of the last nine and 18 of the last 24 matchups in Dallas. Since joining the Mavericks, Harrison Barnes is averaging 23.4 points (.500 FG, .444 3FG, .840 FT) in five games (all starts) against the Celtics (he’s had 19-or-more points in all five of those games).

The Celtics have taken the last two matchups at TD Garden (after the Mavericks won the previous three and six of the previous seven in Boston). Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle was drafted by Boston in 1984.

Why Bet on Dallas?

The Mavs come off a shocking 122-84 win in Charlotte. Shocking because Dallas won its first road game since Nov. 28. It entered the game with an NBA-worst 3-16 road record, compared to 15-3 at home. The Mavericks led 42-26 after the first quarter, and Charlotte got no closer than 18 the rest of the game. Dallas led by at least 20 points for the final 26 1/2 minutes.

Dennis Smith Jr. played well with 18 points on 6-of-10 FGs and 3-of-4 FTs, three 3-pointers, seven assists, three steals, and two turnovers. DSJ had dozens of friends and family members in attendance for this game in his native North Carolina. His troublesome right wrist hasn’t limited him since his return, and he’s warming up for patient owners.

Rookie sensation Luka Doncic had 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three 3-pointers in just 26 minutes. The Mavericks had their full roster healthy for the first time all season. They even made a franchise-record 10 three-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 18 triples as a team. DeAndre Jordan hauled in 13 rebounds on Wednesday, adding eight points, one rebound, and one block. That gives Jordan double-digit boards in 12 consecutive games, which ties the longest streak in Mavericks history. James Donaldson also went 12 straight games with 10-plus boards from 1/31-3/8/89.

Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, who has scored 31,228 points in his illustrious career, currently ranks seventh on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. He needs 192 points to pass Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) for sixth place.

Why Bet on Boston?

The Celtics won 115-102 vs. Minnesota on Wednesday without All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. He was hit in the eye on Monday and has some inflammation in that left eye but it’s not expected to be a long-term thing. Irving is currently averaging 23.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists on the season and is one of just five players across the NBA this season to record at least 23 points, four rebounds and six assists per game joining James Harden, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kemba Walker.

Starting for Irving, Terry Rozier matched his career-high with five steals against the Wolves, while scoring 16 points (6-of-10 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs) with three rebounds, five assists, one block, and two 3-pointers in 32 minutes.

Gordon Hayward scored a season-high 35 points (14-of-18 FGs, 3-of-3 FTs) with one rebound, five assists, and four 3-pointers in 32 minutes. Hayward took over with Kyrie Irving (eye) out, scoring his Celtics career-high in points. Hayward now has two 30-point games this season, with both of them coming against Minnesota. This season-high effort came after he scored zero points against the Spurs.

Hayward feels his lateral movement has improved since the beginning of the season: “Yeah, man, I think it’s slowly getting there,” Hayward said. “Like, I think my lateral movement, it’s so much better since the beginning of the season. But I think that’s pretty close to where it was. I think vertically I still have a little ways to go.”

Marcus Smart (right shoulder strain) briefly left Wednesday’s game, but returned and scored two points (1-of-2 FGs) with three rebounds, eight assists, and two steals in 22 minutes. Marcus Morris (sore neck), though, didn’t finish the game. Morris took an awkward fall in transition while jostling with Taj Gibson, but continued to play before eventually exiting and being ruled out. He finished with 12 points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal, one block, and two 3-pointers in 24 minutes. Morris is questionable.

Irving or not, Celtics win by double digits.
