Warriors vs Lakers NBA Week 15 Lines & Game Preview

Written by on January 21, 2019

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is one of the biggest days of the NBA regular season annually, and Warriors-Lakers looked like a showcase game when the schedule came out. Alas, LeBron James will probably sit again so the Warriors are big NBA betting odds favorites.

2019 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

Season Series

LeBron James injured his groin in the Lakers’ Christmas Day game vs. the Warriors yet L.A. won regardless in a stunner, 127-101. James had 17 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists before the third-quarter injury. James grabbed at his left groin area with 7:51 left in the third after slipping under the Warriors’ basket while trying for a loose ball.

Ivica Zubac had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Rajon Rondo 15 points and 10 assists off the bench as the Lakers snapped an 11-game losing streak in Oakland. Los Angeles also ended a seven-game skid overall in the rivalry with its first win in the series since March 6, 2016. Kevin Durant had 21 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. The 26-point loss was the third-worst loss in a game in which Steph Curry, Durant, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson all played for the Dubs.

Why Bet on Golden State?

The Warriors won their seventh straight on Friday, 112-94 as DeMarcus Cousins made his Golden State debut. Cousins (Achilles) had 14 points (5-of-11 FGs) with six rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block, and three triples before fouling out in 14 minutes. Cousins will remain on a minutes limit for Monday’s game. Steve Kerr said he’d like to get him a few more minutes than the 15 he logged Friday and may get him to around 20 minutes, but he won’t push it. The Warriors will bring him along slowly.

With Cousins joining Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green in the lineup, the Warriors became the first team since the Celtics in 1975-76 to play five All-Stars from the previous season at the same time. That Celtics group included Jo Jo White, Charlie Scott, Dave Cowens, Paul Silas, and John Havlicek. The Celtics All-Stars started two games: Feb. 29, 1976 vs. Golden State and March 3, 1976, at Philadelphia.

Curry scored 28 points in Friday’s win. He hit 10-of-19 shots and 5-of-5 free throws. The Warriors shot just 9 of 37 on 3-pointers on a night when Curry made only three from long range. Fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson missed all four of his 3-point attempts.

Durant had 24 points vs. the Clippers and passed Clyde Drexler (22,195 points) for 31st on the NBA all-time scoring list. Durant is 6 3-pointers away from tying Nick Van Exel (1,528) for 28th on the NBA all-time 3-point field goals made list. Durant has 20 or more points in 32 of the last 33 games, including last 18 games, the longest 20-point streak w/ the Warriors.

Why Bet on LA Lakers?

The Lakers lost 138-134 in overtime at Houston on Saturday again without LeBron James. In addition, Lonzo Ball sprained his left ankle in the third quarter. Coach Luke Walton said his X-rays were negative but that he’d have an MRI and “we’ll see where we are after that.” Early reports are Ball will miss 4-6 weeks. Rajon Rondo (hand) is close to returning and figures to be the starter when he does. Brandon Ingram will likely see time at point guard, too, with Josh Hart, Svi Mykhailiuk and Lance Stephenson picking up some added minutes.

Ingram played point guard down the stretch against the Rockets on Saturday, scoring 21 points with five rebounds, four assists, six turnovers, and one 3-pointer in 36 minutes. Kyle Kuzma stayed hot against the Rockets by making 12-of-19 from the field for 32 points with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, three turnovers and four 3-pointers in 44 minutes. He went off for 20 points in just the first quarter, becoming the first Laker to score that many in the opening period since Kobe Bryant eight years ago.

Warriors vs Lakers should be an easy victory for the visiting team.

It’s thought that both James and Rondo will sit again Monday. Walton says the organization wants both players to come back 100 percent healthy and not hurry. Ingram (19.0 points, 6.7 rebounds) and Kuzma (22.0 points, 7.1 rebounds) have taken most of the scoring load with James out.

A few games ago vs. the Pistons, Kuzma had 41 points in just 29 minutes, the highest point total by a Lakers player to appear in fewer than 30 minutes in the NBA’s shot clock era (since 1954-55). Kuzma became the fifth player in the league this season to score 40 points in three quarters (Steph Curry, James Harden, LeBron James, and Klay Thompson). His 22-point third quarter was the best single-quarter mark of his career and the most by a Lakers player this season.

The Lakers and Warriors have met 327 times in the regular season, where L.A. holds a 252-165 advantage. In the Los Angeles era, the Lakers are 201-125 against the Warriors. The all-time series is split 9-9 in overtime games.
