2017 SWAC Championship Lines & Preview: Alcorn State vs. Grambling State

Written by on November 29, 2017

Before the 2017 regular season got underway this year, SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp announced the decision that the SWAC Championship game would come to an end after this season’s conference championship title tilt. That’s right college football fans, after 18 seasons, this year’s matchup between Alcorn State and Grambling State will be the last one for the foreseeable future and possibly forever. At least there’s a good reason though. “With the creation of the Celebration Bowl as a national showcase for HBCU football, the Council of Presidents and Chancellors decided to suspend the championship game format after the 2017 season,” said Commissioner Duer Sharp. “By focusing on the Celebration Bowl, we can continue to grow the AFRCB as an HBCU classic for the teams and fans of both conferences and for HBCU football nationally.” The SWAC champion will play in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on December 16, 2017. The celebration Bowl, which was established in 2015 features the champion of the SWAC versus the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champion. ACC Championship Odds & Expert Preview: Clemson vs. Miami

Why Bet on the Braves?

Alcorn State is coming into this contest off a humbling 7-3 upset loss against Jackson State this past weekend in their regular-season finale. Alcorn State had its 11-game winning streak against division rivals snapped in the loss. Still, the Braves will make their fourth-straight SWAC Championship Game appearance this coming weekend. Alcorn State coach Fred McNair referred to the road game as a ”pit stop” on its way to Houston and the championship game December 2. Alcorn State came into the game with running back De’Lance Turner needing 107 yards to break the single-season record while wide receiver Norlando Veals came into the game as the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week after pulling in 253 receiving yards and three touchdown passes the week before. The Braves were also leading the SWAC in scoring with an average of 33.7 points per game, but Jackson State limited them to just a 19-yard first-quarter field goal.

Why Bet on the Tigers?

Grambling State is on fire, having won 10 straight games since dropping its regular season opener against Tulane. The Tigers beat Southern 30-21 last weekend to claim the SWAC West title and reach the championship game. Grambling running back Martez Carter came back to lead the way to victory after suffering bruised ribs in the second half. Carter scored on an 11-yard run with 3:22 left to help Grambling win the Bayou Classic in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Saturday. ”When I went back into the huddle, I said, ”OK, guys, I’m back,” Carter said. ”My teammates said, `Are you sure?” I said, ”I’m good. Let’s go.” The Tigers are favorites to win the 2017 SWAC Championship Game. The Tigers won their third straight division title and finished undefeated in SWAC play for the third consecutive season. Carter’s 9-yard TD grab from quarterback Devante Kincaid helped the Tigers build a 17-7 lead. ”Martez is tough,” Grambling coach Broderick Fobbs said. ”He’s come back from injuries before. Anytime I ask him to make a play he steps up. He reaches down deep.” Kincade completed 14 of 30 passes for 171 yards and had a touchdown run. ”Grambling put together a great drive,” Southern cornerback Danny Johnson said. ”We played hard, they played hard. We just have to tip our hats to them.”
