Breaking Down the Duke vs Georgia Tech College Football Betting Match Up
Duke enters this Week 4 matchup coming off a humbling 19-10 loss against surprising Northwestern in Week 3 in which they trailed for the first time all season. The Blue Devils went 3-for-17 (18%) on third down and lost two fumbles in the defeat as quarterback Thomas Sirk was limited to 24-for-39 passing for just 150 yards with one interception. Duke failed to win a game in which they held Northwestern to just 70 passing yards while picking off Wildcats quarterback Clayton Thorson twice. While the final score made the game look a lot closer than it actually was, previously 14th-ranked Georgia Tech got absolutely overwhelmed in its 30-22 Week 3 loss to Notre Dame.
The Yellow Jackets were limited to seven points through three quarters and had to score two late touchdowns to make the final score respectable. Ranked 14th in the nation prior to their loss to the Fighting Irish, Georgia Tech saw its vaunted rushing attack held to 216 yards after the yellow Jackets came into the affair averaging a stunning 457.0 yards per game on the ground. The Yellow Jackets fumbled three times in the loss and although they recovered two of them, the Yellow Jackets also got two missed field goals from kicker Harrison Butler and basically struggled to move the ball throughout the contest.
“We’ve got a lot of young skill guys and we just didn’t play very good,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said. “I think we’ve got to give Notre Dame some credit. They had something to do with that, but the first half was awful. We gave up two long pass plays, our kicking game was atrocious … it was disappointing the way we played.”
Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas was limited to 8-for-24 passing for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, while no Yellow Jackets running back reached the 100-yard plateau.
My Expert Game Analysis & Prediction
59 percent of the betting public likes Georgia Tech to cash in as nearly double-digit road favorite and I believe the Yellow Jackets are going to do just that, seeing how offensively-challenged Duke looked in their loss to Northwestern. I know the Blue Devils have an elite defense that ranks eight in total yards and fourth in points allowed (8.7), but most of those stats were compiled against a pair of pitiful programs in North Carolina Central and Tulane.
Despite their Week 3 loss, Georgia Tech is very explosive offensively, especially with their powerful rushing attack. The Yellow Jackets currently rank sixth in the nation in scoring (52.0 ppg) and second in rushing (377.0 ypg), no to mention the fact that they’re looking for some revenge after having their 10-game winning streak against Duke snapped in last year’s stunning 31-25 home loss to the Blue Devils as a 3.5-point favorite.
Georgia Tech is 10-0 SU and 6-3-1 ATS in their last 10 games as a favorite of eight (8) points or more and a solid 7-3 SU and 6-3-1- ATS in their last 10 road games. Conversely, Duke is just 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog of eight points (8) or more. The Blue Devils are also just 1-2 SU and ATS over their last three home dates and 2-3 SU and ATS over their last five at home. With the Yellow Jackets going 4-1 ATS in their last five road dates against Duke and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings against the Blue devils overall, I say Georgia Tech gets the win and narrow ATS cover.
The Pick: Georgia Tech -9.5 Points
