If you’re a college football betting enthusiast that also likes delving into the historical aspect of collegiate gridiron football, then you’re in for a real treat as we look back – and ahead – at the longstanding rivalry that is known as the Governor’s Trophy Series. This fun-filled look at the Governor’s Trophy rivalry between Boise State and Idaho will give college football bettors a bit of insight into this intriguing affair long before it ever takes place in 2015.

Let’s Get an Insider’s Look at the Vandals vs Broncos Governor’s Trophy Series Odds

The Beginning

While Boise State and Idaho met 30 times before the 2001 season, it wasn’t until that year that the Governor’s Trophy series actually began. You see, after Big West dropped football following the 2000 season, Boise State and Idaho both moved into new conferences with the Broncos going to the WAC and Idaho moving to the Sun Belt as a “football only” member (while remaining in the Big West for all other sports).

In an effort to keep the intrastate rivalry relevant, then Governor Dirk Kempthorne, an Idaho graduate (1975), commissioned the Governor’s Trophy to be awarded to the winning team.

Recent History

Since its inception in 2001 for the 31st game, the ‘traveling’ trophy has yet to travel at all with powerful Boise State winning all 10 meetings since. For four seasons (2001–04) this annual in-state clash has been played as a non-conference game early in the regular season. When Idaho joined the WAC in 2005 the series was returned to a late-season conference matchup. The teams have not squared off since their 2010 meeting, making the rivals’ matchup on Friday, September 18 all the more intriguing.

Boise State, which became a nationally-ranked program under former head coach Chris Petersen went 12-2 overall and a near-perfect 7-1 in conference play in 2014 while putting together a solid 8-6 ATS mark in Bryan Harsin’s first season at the helm. Conversely, Idaho went 1-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play while compiling a decent 5-5-1 ATS mark in spite of their consistent inability to beat opponents outright.

While this game now looks like a bigger mismatch than ever, college football fans all over the state of Idaho will be happy to know that the Governor’s Trophy series is back in 2015 in a big way!
