Indiana vs. Wake Forest College Football Odds Report

Posted by Alex Murphy on Thursday,September 24, 2015 4:49, EST in

Stretching back to the end of last season, the Indiana Hoosiers are riding on a four-game winning streak in the NCAA football betting odds, which is notably the longest streak in the school’s football history since 1993. Their flawless 3-0 (0-0 Big Ten) record so far this season also makes them one of three teams in the Big Ten East teams that are yet to be undefeated (the other teams being the highly-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan State Spartans). Saturday’s meeting between the Hoosiers and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons will thus be an opportunity for Indiana to stay unbeaten, as they also look to break into the top-25 in the nation for the first time in like forever. Can the Hoosiers down the Demon Deacons (2-1, 0-1 ACC) in this Week 4 game, or will Wake Forest hold steady at home for a third win of the season? Read on, as we break it all down for you.

Let’s Get Into It With the Indiana @ Wake Forest Match Up Betting Preview & Analysis

Going by the way they’ve played so far this season, it’s hard to pin-point whether the Demon Deacons are a good, bad or middling team, having had mixed results in their first three games on the year. After recording a 41-3 blowout win over FCS Elon in Week 1, they followed it up with a road conference loss to a shaky Syracuse team, and then survived an onslaught from the upset-minded Army team, thanks to late game-winning field goal.

Further complicating what to expect from the Demon Deacons this week is the fact that they are not decided on who will play at quarterback against the Hoosiers. John Wolford and Kendall Hinton have both shared reps at the QB position, flashing signs of brilliance and immaturity nearly in equal measure. In essence, that’s why there have been several debates in the bid to determine who will be most fit to go against the Hoosiers this week. Whoever wins the battle, or whether they both get turns to move the chains, the bottom line is that Indiana defense will need to prepare for anything and everything.

For an Indiana defense that that is rated at No. 120 in the country (out of 128 FBS teams) by FPI, allowing 544-plus yards per game, it is certainly not good news that they have don’t know who they’ll be facing at QB, since it makes their preparations somewhat difficult.

Nonetheless, the Hoosiers can take comfort in the fact that the Indiana offense has been doing quite well in moving the ball. Quarterback Nate Sudfeld is coming off a big game against Western Kentucky, where he went 20-of-27 for 355 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead his team to a 38-35 victory. Anchored on Sudfeld’s crisp passing game (ranked 13th nationally in passing yards) and the stellar ground game of UAB transfer Jordan Howard (who leads the FBS in total rushing yards at 507, and is second-best in the nation in yards per game at 169.0), the Hoosiers own one of the best attacking units in their conference. Notably, they lead the Big Ten in scoring (at 40.7), passing (at 312.7) and total offense (at 557.7), and are second in rushing (at 245.0).

As a concern, though, the Demon Deacons will be, by far, the strongest defense the Hoos have faced this season. Wake Forest is placed at No. 9 in the nation in total defense (allowing just 253.7 yards per game) and No. 7 in third-down conversion (7-of-36, 19 percent). Sudfeld and his unit are thus likely to be tested extremely, calling for the defense to offer some much-needed support. In this regard, IU safety Jonathan Crawford, who was selected as co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week after recorded two interceptions against Western Kentucky, will need to rally his teammates for a strong showing.

My Hoosiers @ Demon Deacons Expert Football Prediction

This dicey game could go either way, depending on who prepares best and fights hardest for the win. And going by the unbeaten momentum on Indiana’s side, I’ll go out on a limb and pick them to be the better team, securing a narrow win that will earn them both the SU and ATS, as the total goes above 60 points in a shootout OVER affair.
