UCLA vs BYU College Football Spread Analysis

Seriously, these Vegas guys have to start showing some respect to BYU in the NCAA Fotball betting odds. This is a team that lost starting QB Taysom Hill for the year with a broken foot against Nebraska in Week 1, but freshman Tanner Mangum came up big with a game-winning Hail Mary to down the Cornhuskers 33-28. Then, in his first career start against the Boise State in Week 2, Mangum went magnum again, orchestrating a clutch game-winning drive to upset the No. 20 Boise State, 35-24. You’d think that after recording the two non-conference upsets and being rewarded with a No.19 placement in the National Polls, the Cougars (2-0) would be respected. Instead, it’s the exact opposite, as the Cougars have been placed as massive underdogs against the Bruins. C’mon, Josh Rosen and the Bruins (2-0) are good, but not THAT good. If anything, Rosen showed that he may not be that flawless as we thought after his sterling Week 1 display.

NCAAF Odds: BYU Cougars (+16.5) vs. UCLA Bruins (-16.5), OVER/UNDER 59.5

Why Bet on the UCLA Bruins

After passing for 351 passing yards and 3 TDs in his career debut against Virginia, Rosen went 22-of-42 for 223 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the 37-3 win over UNLV, which was evidently a step down, considering UNLV is smaller team that should have warranted a stronger performance from the quarterback.

Fortunately for Rosen, Paul Perkins and the running game carried the team. Perkins finished the game with 151 yards and two TDs. If the runners can hit the ground running once again this Saturday, all should be well, even if the Rosen and the passing game find it difficult to breach the young-but-talented BYU defense.

Why Bet on the BYU Cougars

For BYU, the hammer rises and falls on Mangum’s arms. Having gone 17-of-28 for 309 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in his first career start against Boise State, the O-line will need to protect the QB better, or else the pressure on the road could lead to more picks and a frustrated display against the Los Angeles team.

Of course, senior running back Adam Hiné, who rushed for 93 yards and a TD on 19 carries against a Boise State, could also play a huge role. But with the Cougars going against a solid UCLA front that is likely to keep them from running the ball well, Mangum’s performance will be most crucial if BYU is to keep the game close, or even secure an unlikely upset win.

My Expert BYU @ UCLA NCAA Football Betting Predictions

Even with the Cougars playing their hearts out, UCLA will most likely claim the win here, though BYU should be able to keep the margin close enough for a cover. Total-wise, both teams are capable of combining for around 50 points, but it doesn’t look like they’ll go as high as 60 points, so an UNDER should be in the offing.
