The Rose Bowl is called the “Granddaddy of them all” as it has more tradition than any bowl game in college football. Neither the Pac-12 nor Big Ten got a team in the College Football Playoff this year, so Pac-12 champion and No. 9 Washington faces Big Ten champion and No. 6 Ohio State for all the Roses on New Year’s Day. The Buckeyes are NCAAF odds favorites at Mybookie Sportsbook in Urban Meyer’s final game as their coach.

Since the first game in 1902, the Rose Bowl has showcased 17 Heisman Trophy Winners, produced 29 national champions, featured 199 consensus All-Americans. This year’s Rose Bowl Game will be the 12th meeting between the Buckeyes and the Huskies but will be the first occurrence in the Rose Bowl.
Ohio State boasts an 8-3 record vs. Washington. All 11 OSU-UW games have been contested in the regular season (i.e., no bowl matchups). Six of the 11 have been played at Husky Stadium (UW is 2-4 in those games) while the other five have been at Ohio Stadium (UW is 1-4 in those).
Why Bet on Washington?
Washington will be making its 39th bowl game appearance in Pasadena. The Huskies enter the game with an 18-19-1 overall record in bowl games, dating back to the 1924 Rose Bowl, where the UW tied Navy, 14-14. This game vs. Ohio State marks the Huskies’ 15th trip to the Rose Bowl and the UW’s ninth straight season going to a different bowl game.
Washington won its 18th Pac-12 Championship by beating Utah in the title game and finished the season 10-3 overall and 7-2 in conference. The Huskies will also make their 15th appearance in the Rose Bowl Game. Washington is 7-6-1 overall. In their last Rose Bowl Game, the Huskies defeated Purdue, 34-24, on January 1, 2001.
Since the 1947 season, Washington is 217-66-3 (.7643) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies were 8-0 in such games in 2016, were 5-1 in 2017 and are 5-0 this year. Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 117 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 100-16-1 (.859) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 75-13-1 (.848) when rushing for 200 yards.
Quarterback Jake Browning has started and played in 52 out of a possible 53 games during his career. He is 39-13 (.750) in those 52 games. His win total is more than any other Pac-12 starting quarterback and 16 more than the next highest Huskies (Steve Pelluer and Brock Huard).
Washington hasn’t allowed a team to score 40 points in its last 57 games and, during that same span, has allowed over 30 only four times. Over those 57 games, UW has outscored opponents, 1,916-995. UW’s defense has allowed just nine scrimmage plays of 30 or more yards (tied for fewest in the nation) and just one of 40 or more, fewest in the FBS.
Why Bet on OSU?
The 2019 Rose Bowl Game represents Ohio State’s 49th bowl game. The Buckeyes are 23-25 in bowl games, including 4-2 under Urban Meyer.
Ohio State won its second consecutive and 37th overall Big Ten Championship by routing Northwestern in the title game and finished the season 12-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. The Buckeyes will make their 15th appearance in the Rose Bowl Game. Ohio State is 7-7 in Pasadena on New Year’s Day, most recently defeating Oregon, 26-17, on January 1, 2010.
This year’s Rose Bowl will be the first appearance in Pasadena for Meyer, who is 11-3 over his career in bowl games for a .785 winning percentage that is second-highest in college football history. He has previously coached Ohio State to postseason wins at the Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Meyer is retiring after this game and will be replaced by offensive coordinator Ryan Day.
OSU is led by QB and Heisman finalist Dwayne Haskins, who should be playing his final college game. In the Big Ten title game, he set Ohio State’s single-game passing record with 499 yards while tossing five touchdowns to raise his season total to 47. His 4,580 yards rank first nationally as do his 47 touchdown passes. The Buckeyes own the nation’s No. 2-ranked total offense (548.8 yards/game), No. 2 passing offense (373.0 yards/game) and No. 8 scoring offense (43.5 points/game). At wide receiver, Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill, Johnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin each have over 30 catches and have combined for 35 receiving touchdowns.
On defense, Ohio State has 93 tackles for loss, good for 15th in the country, and 39 sacks, seventh-best nationally. DE Chase Young leads in both categories with 14.5 TFLs (for minus 80 yards) and 9.5 sacks. DT Dre’mont Jones has 13.0 & 8.5, respectively. LB Malik Harrison leads with 74 tackles.
