Can Raiders back the NFL Betting Odds for Week 5 without Derek Carr?

Can Raiders back the NFL Betting Odds for Week 5 without Derek Carr?

Written by on October 6, 2017

Given the salary cap in the NFL, we have all become used to seeing the majority of teams in the league go on a rollercoaster ride of good seasons followed by lean rebuilding years. Some franchises are able to buck the trend and remain consistently good, while others go into a downward spiral that converts them into a constant NFL betting odds underdog. The Oakland Raiders were stuck in that latter category for as long as anyone could remember, but the drafting of a franchise QB in Derek Carr seemed to be the perfect catalyst for change. It all came together last year when the Raiders put together a great season that ended in disappointment when Carr went down late in the season. Expectations were high this year, but Carr is once again out with an extended injury, and it’s going to be interesting to see if this team has the intestinal fortitude to gut it out until he returns in 2-6 weeks. The Raiders will welcome in another team with a QB issue, as Joe Flacco and his Baltimore Ravens head west for Week 5. The Ravens are struggling and are coming in as a 2 ½ point underdog. The O/U for this one has been set at 39 points.

Why bet on the Baltimore Ravens?

The Baltimore Ravens started out the season well, winning their first two games and doing so by playing some dominating defense. It all went south in Week 3 when they traveled to London and were totally destroyed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. That was followed up by another dismantling at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers at home. Baltimore now needs a win in the worst way possible, but there are some serious doubts that Joe Flacco and his offense are going to be able to deliver that. Flacco had the worst game of his career in London and did not look much better versus the Steelers, the main reason to be underdogs according to the NFL Betting Odds for Week 5. The Ravens offense is still good, but they are spending too much time on the field, which more often than not leads to a unit getting worn down and eventually picked apart. Further compounding the issue for Baltimore is that they are just 1-7 SU in their last 8 road games, although they are 5-2 in their last 7 visits to Oakland, although the majority of those wins came when the Raiders were not very good.

Why bet on the Oakland Raiders?

The Oakland Raiders started the season the way we all thought they would, winning back to back games and racking up a lot of points in the process. Since then, they have lost a pair of games, lost their starting QB, and have managed only 20 points over the last 2 weeks. The most concerning aspect of those negative moments must surely be the loss of Derek Carr. He was replaced by backup EJ Manuel in a 16-10 loss the Denver Broncos last weekend, and while the replacement was not asked to do a lot, he did not look particularly effective in the attempts he did have. Khalil Mack and the Raiders remain as the NFL Betting Odds favorites for Week 5. Look for the Raiders to go with a healthy dose of the run game, especially after watching LeVeon Bell tear up the Ravens D on the ground last week. Oakland is good at home, going 5-0 SU and 5-1 ATS in their most recent games at the Coliseum.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

While the UNDER has hit in 4 of the last 5 meetings between these two teams, I think it might go OVER by the barest of margins this weekend. I like Oakland’s NFL Betting Odds to win by two or three points, which would mean that the Ravens would cover. Score: Baltimore Ravens 19 – Oakland Raiders 21
