The Panthers limited San Francisco to just three third quarter points while Cam Newton completed 14 of 25 passes for 171 yards with two TD strikes and one interception in the win. Veteran running back Jonathan Stewart rushed for a team-high 65 yards on 118 carries while rookie running back and first round draft pick Christian McCaffrey rushed 13 times for 47 yards while adding five receptions for an additional 38 yards. “We did a good job of spreading the football,” Rivera said. “I would like to see more mixtures of the receiver combinations.”
Wide receiver Russell Shepard caught two passes with one going for a score while Stewart added two catches while grabbing Newton’s other TD pass in the win. Defensively, Carolina picked off San Francisco quarterback Brian Hoyer once while limiting the Niners to just 51 rushing yards in the win. Pro Bowl linebacker Luke Kuechly recorded a team-high seven tackles while fellow Pro Bowl linebacker Thomas Davis added one sack.
“We have guys who do know (about us),” Carolina coach Ron Rivera said. “They have an idea. It will be an interesting matchup. … It will be a nice little homecoming. There is a tremendous amount of familiarity.”
