While the Detroit Lions had their second straight winning season in 2017 and third in the last four years overall. Still, the longtime NFC North residents decided to change head coaches by parting ways with Jim Caldwell after going 36-28 under the former Indianapolis Colts head coach during the four-year span.
Now, after hiring former New England Patriots coordinator Matt Patricia to take over and lead them in a new direction, there are a bunch of must-see, must-bet matchups on Detroit’s 2018 schedule. I’ve highlighted six such contests that look like they’re offering NFL betting buffs everywhere a bunch of value. Let’s get to them right now.

Week 2: Sunday, Sept. 16, at San Francisco 49ers, 4:05 PM ET
The Niners are expected to take a big step forward in 2018 because of new starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and some other nice transactions they made this offseason, and even though I think some of the expectations being put on them are a bit premature, I like them to get past a Detroit Lions team that will be still learning how to play their new schemes under first-time head coach Matt Patricia.
NFL Betting Pick: Lions 13 San Francisco 24
Week 3: Sunday, Sept. 23, vs. New England Patriots, 8:20 PM ET
It’s all fine and well that Matt Patricia worked for the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick and that he knows the Pats schemes and quarterback Tom Brady, but that won’t help the Lions take down a well-oiled Patriots team that is simply better than Detroit – at everything!
NFL Betting Pick: Patriots 31 Lions 20
Week 4: Sunday, Sept. 30, at Dallas Cowboys, 1 PM ET
While I certainly don’t think the Cowboys are going to be head and shoulders better than Detroit in 2018, I do like Dallas to get the win at home behind their powerful rushing attack and just enough passing from Dak Prescott. Basically, these two teams are so evenly matched, it’s a no-brainer to go with the home team.
NFL Betting Pick: Lions 17 Dallas 27
Week 5: Sunday, Oct. 7, vs. Green Bay Packers, 1 PM ET
The Packers might have the best quarterback in the game today in the incomparable Aaron Rodgers, but I’m expecting Green Bay to have their share of problems on both sides of the ball in 2018. With that said, I’m predicting a regular season split against the Lions this coming campaign, so I say go with the home team in this one as well.
NFL Betting Pick: Lions 27 Packers 24
Week 7: Sunday, Oct. 21, at Miami Dolphins, 1 PM ET
The Dolphins might be playing at home in this one, but I’m not expecting them to be very good in 2018 at all. Ryan Tannehill is completely mediocre at quarterback, both, Jarvis Landry and Jay Ajayi are now gone and Ndamukong Suh is no longer the anchor on defense. Matthew Stafford and Golden Tate should have their way in this one despite being on the road. Besides, Matt Patricia knows just what to do against the Dolphins after years of stymieing them with the AFC East rival Patriots.
NFL Betting Pick: Lions 28 Dolphins 20
Week 12: Thursday, Nov. 22, vs. Chicago Bears, 12:30 PM ET
The Lions have won five straight at home against Chicago and this Week 12 NFC North divisional matchup will be another W for the Lions against a Chicago team that will have its own inexperienced first-time head coach in former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.
NFL Betting Pick: Lions 31 Bears 24
