Green Bay vs San Francisco Week 3 NFL 2021

Green Bay vs San Francisco | Week 3 NFL 2021

Written by on September 24, 2021

This past offseason, there were rumors that Green Bay star quarterback Aaron Rodgers wanted to be traded to San Francisco, which is the area where he grew up. Of course, that didn’t happen. Rodgers has a homecoming Sunday night when the Pack visit the Niners, who are favored on the NFL odds.

Green Bay won at San Francisco in Week 9 last season, 34-17. It is the fourth consecutive season Green Bay has faced the 49ers in a prime-time contest and the third consecutive year on the road. Dating back to 1970, it is the first time the Packers have played at the 49ers in the regular season in three straight years. Dating back to 1996, the Packers have a 12-3 mark against San Francisco during the regular season. Sunday will be the fifth game (including playoffs) for Green Bay at Levi’s Stadium (2015, 2019, 2019 NFC Championship, 2020).

Why Bet on Green Bay?

The Packers evened their record at 1-1 with Monday’s 35-17 win over Detroit. Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 27 passes (81.5 pct.) for 255 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions for a 145.6 rating in last week’s win. He enters Week 3 with 416 career touchdown passes and with four more in San Francisco can tie Hall of Famer Dan Marino (420 touchdown passes) for the sixth-most in NFL history.

Rodgers has posted 23 TDs, five INTs and a passer rating of 104.0 (including postseason) against San Francisco. Including the postseason, Rodgers has thrown for over 300 yards in three of the last four games against San Francisco (305, 326, 425).

Aaron Jones rushed 17 times for 67 yards and one touchdown and had six catches for 48 yards and three touchdowns. Jones has scored 42 touchdowns over his past 40 regular-season games. He joined Hall of Famers Don Huston (53 touchdowns), Jim Taylor (47) and Paul Hornung (41) as the only other players in team history to score at least 40 touchdowns over a 40-game stretch.

Davante Adams had eight catches for 121 yards against the Lions but no TDs. However, he has recorded a touchdown reception in nine consecutive games on Sunday Night Football, the longest such streak in NFL history. Adams has played in four games against the 49ers (including playoffs), averaging nine receptions, 121.5 yards and a TD per game.

Green Bay played without star pass-rushing linebacker Za’Darius Smith, who was shut down following a limited showing in Week 1 against New Orleans. Smith, a Pro Bowler who logged 12.5 sacks in 2020, could be out for a while after a setback in his recovery from a back injury. Without him, the Packers have the league’s lowest sack rate (1.72 percent) through Week 2.

Mason Crosby enters Week 2 with a streak of 19 consecutive FGs made, tied for the second-longest streak in team history (Crosby, 23, 2010-11 / Crosby, 19, 2013-14).

Why Bet on San Francisco?

San Francisco has started 2-0 for the third time in 10 seasons, and second under Kyle Shanahan. In each of their previous 2-0 starts – 2012 and 2019 – the 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl. Shanahan and Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur helped lead the Falcons to Super Bowl LI as Atlanta assistant coaches in 2016. They also served together on coaching staffs in Houston and Washington. San Francisco looks to start the season 3-0 for the second time in three seasons and the 9th time in franchise history.

The Niners won in Philadelphia 17-11 last Sunday. Jimmy Garoppolo threw one touchdown pass and ran in for a score, and Nick Bosa had two sacks.  Rookie QB Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall draft pick, played four snaps last week and threw a TD pass in Week 1 against the Lions but didn’t play vs. Philly. Jimmy G is now 26-8 (.764) in 34 career starts. The 49ers offense has surrendered just 1 sack through the first 2 weeks of the 2021 season, the fewest in the NFL.

Rather amazingly, the Niners’ top three running backs all went down with injury in Week 2. The 49ers had entered Sunday’s game already shorthanded at the position with Raheem Mostert (knee) out for the season. JaMycal Hasty (ankle) is not playing this week but it’s up in the air on rookies Trey Sermon (concussion) and Elijah Mitchell (shoulder). Shanahan proclaimed Sermon on the right path to playing on Thursday, but Mitchell didn’t practice as of Thursday.

Deebo Samuel’s 282 receiving yards are the 3rd-most through the first 2 weeks of a season in 49ers history [Bernie Casey – 288 (1964); WR Jerry Rice – 285 (1989)]. Samuel leads the NFL. Of his six catches vs. the Eagles, three went for first downs, including two on their first scoring drive. The big play of the game was a 40-yard catch-and-run that helped set up the game’s first touchdown.
