NFL Betting – How to Win When Betting on the NFL

NFL Betting can be a really rewarding experience in every aspect, but before we give you an insight into details that will enable you to win money when placing bets on the NFL, the most popular sports league in America – it might be a good idea to provide some basic info about betting in general. This way you will learn basics on each of the different wager types, such as moneyline, spread, totals, halftimes, parlays/teasers and futures.

Spread Betting

NFL wagers are primarily affected by the point spread. The spread is a type of a side bet that compares the possibility to win a wager. There will be a plus or minus symbol provided with every team in the line, in order to give you an idea which team is considered the favorite or the underdog when it comes to bets placed until that moment. Here is an example from the Sports Insights archives at the kickoff moment:

Team Spread at Kickoff Final Score
Indianapolis Colts -9 (-110) 23
Tennessee Titans +9 (-110) 20

As you can see from this example, there is “-110″ next to both spreads. This number is called vig, the juice, or odds. The juice is the amount to lay in order to win $100. In this case, a bet of $110 will bring a $100 profit. In our example, even though Titans lost, it was able to cover the spread because they lost by a difference under the 9 points. The best line is important in sports betting, and you will manage that if you shop for the best line.

Moneyline

Money line bets are real gambling bets, because they provide high profit, when placed on the supposed loser which actually wins.

1st Half and Quarter Lines

Bets are usually placed on the result at the end of a game. However, NFL betting is a bit different and enables you to place bets on a result on the 1st quarter and 1st half lines as well. The quarter bet determines who will win when the 1st quarter is finished. The same goes for the 1st half line, but the wager ends after the first two quarters.

Halftime Lines

Bets can also be placed during halftime, predicting how the second half will end, which are also called line, halftime, or 2nd half. The 2nd half line is determined primarily on the result during the first half.

Totals or Over/Under Bets

The idea in this betting is to determine whether the number of total goals scored by both teams in the game will be under or over the predicted number by the sportsbook.

Parlays/Teasers

Parlays are combined bets placed on the money line, spread and totals to enhance the win. But you will win only if all individual bets win. A teaser is the same, but you get points down in your favor to help you win.

Futures

Futures bets are what the name says: placing a bet on the future game outcome.
