If you are new to NFL betting action then this article is for you. Let us take you through the basic mechanics and terminologies, so you can get the most money out of this upcoming season.

In general, there are many different ways to place a bet on sports and on the NFL. The three basic forms of football lines in betting include the following:

NFL Odds in the Moneyline:

If a bettor wants to bet on a football game by only making predictions about the team winning or losing, then the simplest form of NFL Betting is the Moneyline. To understand the NFL Odds in this form of betting, let us look at the example of the NFL Moneyline:

Falcons vs Buccaneers 2014

The foremost thing to see in the betting lines are the plus and minus signs. On an average of $100, if you place $100 on Atlanta you will get a winning amount of $160 and if you place $100 on Tampa Bay you will get $180 upon winning. The plus sign is for favorite team and negative sign is for the underdog.

NFL Odds in the Point Spread Bets:

The method of betting by which a bettor can come closest to a standard amount or even figure on the sides of both the teams is called the point spread. This method allows risk minimization for the bettor. The NFL Odds can be understood with the following example:

  • Seattle –3
  • New York +3

Accordingly, the Seattle team is the favorite to win with a 3 points plus. For a bettor betting on Seattle would require that the team wins by more than 3 points.

NFL Odds of the Totals Bets:

This method allows the bettors to bet on over and under estimations of the total points scored by both the teams in the game. For example: Green Bay Packers against Seattle Seahawks, over or under 36 points total.
