The Gardner Minshew Era begins with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday as the Jags will be forced to start the rookie under center when they visit Houston, which lost an incredible game Monday night in New Orleans. The Texans are big favorites on the NFL Odds to get to 1-1.

The Texans swept in 2019. The one in Houston was a 20-3 Texans win in Week 17 as they clinched the AFC South title. Deshaun Watson threw for 234 yards and ran for a touchdown and DeAndre Hopkins had 147 yards receiving in the victory. Houston built a 14-point lead in the first half behind rushing touchdowns by Watson and Lamar Miller and made it 20-3 on a 24-yard field goal with about 11 minutes left. That was the last game as a Jaguar for quarterback Blake Bortles.

Why Bet on Jacksonville?
The Jaguars lost starting quarterback Nick Foles to a broken collarbone in the Week 1 40-26 loss to Kansas City and Foles has been placed on injured reserve. He was hurt when Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones drove him into the ground after Foles released the ball on a 35-yard touchdown pass to DJ Chark. He left the sideline for X-rays and was ruled out of the game shortly after.
By being placed on injured reserve, Foles won’t be eligible to practice for the next six weeks or play in games for the next eight weeks. The Jaguars hope to get him back during the second half of the season, but Foles did mention that this injury is worse than the broken collarbone that held him out for the final eight weeks of the 2014 campaign.
Rookie Gardner Minshew takes over. Minshew completed his first 13 passes vs. the Chiefs — the most by a rookie quarterback to begin his career over the past 40 years — en route to throwing for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Minshew completed 22 of 25 passes, with one of the incompletions a pass that bounced off Leonard Fournette’s hands and was intercepted. Minshew’s completion percentage (88.0) was the highest in NFL history for a player with at least 15 pass attempts making his NFL debut. It was also a franchise single-game record among players with at least 25 pass attempts.
The Jags also traded for Steelers quarterback Josh Dobbs to back up Minshew. The Steelers drafted Dobbs in the fourth round in 2017 out of Tennessee. Dobbs did not play as a rookie but appeared in five games last season and completed 6 of 12 passes for 43 yards with one interception.
Left tackle Cam Robinson suffered a hyperextended right knee the Thursday before the opener against Kansas City, and backup Cedric Ogbuehi hasn’t practiced since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 3 of the preseason, which meant first-year player Will Richardson started at left tackle in the season opener. Robinson’s return is TBA.

Why Bet on Houston?
Houston lost a wild Monday night game in New Orleans, 30-28. Deshaun Watson threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to ex-Saints receiver Kenny Stills with 37 seconds left, capping a two-play, 75-yard drive that put the Texans in front after they began their final possession down by six with 50 seconds left. But the Texans defense gave Drew Brees too much time to get into field-goal position, and Wil Lutz hit a 58-yarder at the gun.
Watson completed 20-of-30 passes for 268 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, adding a fourth touchdown and 40 rushing yards on the ground. Watson also took six sacks after taking a league-high 62 in 2018. The Saints had 11 quarterback hits, and Watson had two lengthy stints in the blue medical tent in the first half.
DeAndre Hopkins caught 8-of-13 targets for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Stills caught all three of his targets for 37 yards and one touchdown in his Houston debut. Duke Johnson rushed nine times for 57 yards and caught 4-of-5 targets for 33 yards in his Texans debut. Carlos Hyde rushed 10 times for 83 yards in his first game with Houston. Acquired from the Chiefs at final cuts after he quickly washed out of Kansas City, Hyde was solid with several chunk runs.
The Texans were so upset with cornerback Aaron Colvin giving up big plays on Monday that they cut him. The Texans signed Colvin to a four-year, $34 million contract with $18 million guaranteed just last offseason and still owe Colvin $7.5 million guaranteed. Throughout the game, when Colvin was the nearest defender to the targeted receiver at time of ball arrival, the Saints completed 7 of 8 pass attempts for 106 yards and a touchdown.
