Jets vs Browns NFL Week 3 Odds & Pick for Thursday Night

Written by on September 19, 2018

Last year, the NY Jets were 5-11 and the Cleveland Browns 0-16. They have combined for just one victory in 2018. Yet, their Thursday night matchup to kick off NFL Week 3 actually is pretty interesting. The Browns are favored, which is notable since they hadn’t been a home favorite in the NFL odds since 2015.

Last Meeting

The Jets and Browns meet for the 25th time in the regular season with the all-time series tied 12-12. In their last meeting (Week 5 of 2017 season), Jets quarterback Josh McCown threw two second-half touchdown passes as the Jets won by a field goal. He’s now the New York backup. The Jets have taken the past five in this series.

Why Bet on NY Jets?

The Jets (1-1) lost their home opener last Sunday, 20-12 to Miami. Rookie quarterback Sam Darnold passed for 334 yards with one touchdown. Darnold, who was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, became the youngest player in NFL history (21 years, 103 days old) to throw for at least 300 yards in a single game, surpassing the previous record held by Jacky Lee (21 years, 137 days old), who threw for 331 yards on November 25, 1960. Darnold averaged over eight yards per attempt for the second straight week, but his two picks were costly. The second wasn’t Darnold’s fault; Terrelle Pryor appeared to cut off his route in the back of the end zone, allowing Xavien Howard to catch it. Darnold also missed a would-be game-changing play when he overthrew wide-open Quincy Enunwa in the back of the end zone in the second half. Enunwa caught 7-of-11 targets for 92 yards. Firmly established as Darnold’s go-to guy, Enunwa has racked up double-digit targets in back-to-back games. Robby Anderson caught 3-of-5 targets for 27 yards. He’s been out-targeted 21 to 6 by Enunwa through two games. Bilal Powell rushed five times for six yards but caught 5-of-6 targets for 74 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Crowell managed 35 yards on 12 carries and caught 2-of-3 targets for four yards. Safety Jamal Adams and linebacker Jordan Jenkins each recorded a sack and a forced fumble. Tight end Neal Sterling (concussion) will not play in Week 3 at the Browns. Rookie Chris Herndon will stand in as Gang Green’s receiving tight end. Coach Todd Bowles refused to rule out safety Marcus Maye even though he’s not expected to play. Bowles said Maye has been dealing with an issue on the bottom of his foot, although he declined to be specific.

Why Bet on Cleveland?

The Browns should be 2-0 but gagged Week 1 away vs. Pittsburgh in a tie and totally blew a 21-18 loss in New Orleans last week. They are now on a 19-game winless streak. Tyrod connected with rookie wide receiver Antonio Callaway on a game-tying 47-yard touchdown with 1:16 remaining the fourth quarter at New Orleans in Week 2, but kicker Zane Gonzalez missed the go-ahead PAT. A Saints field goal with 21 seconds remaining secured the win. Taylor completed 22-of-30 passes for 246 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jarvis Landry caught 5-of-7 targets for 69 yards in the loss. Landry has recorded at least five receptions in 19 consecutive games, tied with Laveranues Coles (19 from September 29, 2002, to October 12, 2003) for the second-longest streak in league annals. Carlos Hyde rushed 16 times for 43 yards and touchdown. Jets vs Browns is the first game of the NFL Week 3. The big news around the Browns this week was the team releasing Gonzalez after he missed two PATs and two field goals vs. the Saints and trading Josh Gordon to New England for a fifth-round pick. To replace Gonzalez, the team signed Greg Joseph. He is a UDFA out of Florida Atlantic, where he converted just 69.5 percent of his field goal attempts in Conference USA. Joseph said he made six-of-seven kicks in his tryout Monday, missing from 56 yards before making it on his second try. The coldest conditions he kicked in during his college days: At Western Kentucky (2017) where the game-time temperature was 39 degrees. Hue Jackson was asked if it was a relief to have final clarity on Gordon: “I hate to term it a relief. I’m glad that there’s closure. Let’s just say it that way.” To replace Gordon, the team signed receiver Rod Streater, in his sixth season out of Temple. Streater has 127 receptions in 52 games for the Raiders and 49ers. He was with Buffalo in the preseason. Starting safety Damarious Randall (heel) did not practice Tuesday. He was also listed as a DNP on Monday, making it likely he sits out Thursday’s game against the Jets. Derrick Kindred would likely start in his place. DE Emmanuel Ogbah (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 3.
