Series History

The Dolphins lead the all-time series against the Raiders, 18-17-1. The teams met last year on Dec. 26, where Miami got a 26-25 comeback win over the Raiders in the last home game of the 2020 season at Allegiant Stadium. The Raiders have won one of the last three games played against the Dolphins.

Why Bet on Miami?

Not much went right for Miami in last week’s 35-0 loss to Buffalo. Tua Tagovailoa was knocked out in the first quarter with what turned out to be fractured ribs and he won’t play this week. Coach Brian Flores called Tagovailoa “day-to-day and week-to-week” in terms of how long he will be out, stopping short of saying whether the first-round pick from 2020 will be placed on injured reserve.

It will be veteran Jacoby Brissett under center after he finished the Buffalo loss 24-of-40 for 169 yards with an interception. Pro Football Focus charged the Miami offensive line with 34 total pressures on 57 quarterback drop backs between Brissett and Tagovailoa. Adding injury to insult, Jesse Davis exited the game with a knee injury.

Brissett does have extensive experience, starting 30 games for Indianapolis in 2017 and 2019 as well as a pair of contests for New England as a rookie in 2016. He has completed 59.6% of his 1,023 pass attempts for 6,628 yards and 31 touchdowns against 14 interceptions.

The concern with Brissett at quarterback is that he averages 2.93 seconds to throw for his career, almost half a second longer than Tua. His tendency to hold on to the ball could potentially expose a weak Miami offensive line. Unknown Reid Sinnett will be the No. 2.

One bright spot last week was Miami’s Xavien Howard, who led the NFL with 10 interceptions last season, getting his first 2021 interception. Howard is also the only NFL player this season with an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Buffalo was 7-for-13 on third down and converted their only fourth-down attempt. On the season, Miami’s third-down defense (which was best in football in 2020) is allowing conversions on 62.1 percent of time (18-for-29). Buffalo also converted all four of their red zone possessions for touchdowns.

This should be the season debut of free-agent addition WR Will Fuller. He was suspended Week 1 and missed Week 2 for personal reasons. The Dolphins signed Fuller this offseason to add another vertical threat to the offense. After later drafting Jaylen Waddle in the first round, Miami’s weaponry looked bolstered on paper.

Why Bet on Las Vegas?

The Raiders enter the game leading the NFL with 458.0 yards per game. Derek Carr passed for 382 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions for a 126.2 rating in the Raiders’ 26-17 win at Pittsburgh last Sunday. Carr, who passed for 435 yards and two touchdowns in Week 1, is the fifth quarterback in the Super Bowl era with at least 375 passing yards and two touchdown passes in each of his team’s first two games of a season.

With 383 passing yards against Miami, Carr will become the fourth player with at least 1,200 passing yards through his team’s first three games of a season in NFL history. Dating back to Week 16 of the 2020 season, Carr has recorded at least 325 passing yards in four consecutive games. If he reaches the mark this week, he will become the fourth player to record 325 passing yards in at least five consecutive games in NFL history.

Top running back Josh Jacobs missed Week 2 with an ankle injury and it’s not clear if he will go here. Jacobs was dressed for Thursday’s practice and wearing a red, non-contact jersey during the portion of the workout open to the media. Left guard Richie Incognito has missed the first two games of the year with a calf injury and not expected this week.

In the win over the Steelers, the Raiders pressured Ben Roethlisberger on 31.0% of his dropbacks (his 2nd-highest pressure rate in a game since 2020). Maxx Crosby and Yannick Ngakoue both generated 5+ pressures for the 2nd consecutive game. The duo combined for 11 quarterback pressures. The consistent pressure led to Roethlisberger overthrowing a pass down the field that was intercepted by Trayvon Mullen Jr. in the first quarter. Crosby and Ngakoue have combined for 26 pressures this season.

The Raiders offense is ranked first in the league in total offense (458 yards per game), first in passing (391 ypg), tied for 31st in rushing (67 ypg) and seventh in points (29.5 ppg). Defensively, the Raiders rank 16th in total defense (368.5 ypg), tied for 14th in passing (254.5 ypg), 16th in rushing (114 ypg) and tied for eighth in points allowed (22 ppg).

Daniel Carlson is 6-for-6 in field goals and 5-for-5 in extra points this year.
