While Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers (13-3 SU, 9-6-1 ATS) came up short in their quest to win Super Bowl 54 last season, oddsmakers believe the Niners will be right back in the thick of the Super Bowl 55 hunt in 2020 and rightfully so. Let’s check their NFL odds for this upcoming season.
NFL San Francisco 49ers Calendar Analysis
After winning 13 games a year ago, San Francisco will enter the 2020 NFL regular season loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. The bad news is that Frisco has the fourth toughest schedule in the league in 2020 (.527).
The NFC West plays non-division games against the NFC East and AFC East in 2020 and that means the Niners will face three teams from those division that made the playoffs a year ago (New England, Buffalo and Philadelphia). However, the Niners also have dates against two division rivals that recorded winning records in 2019 (Seattle, LA Rams) while taking on three more 2019 playoff participants in Green Bay, New Orleans and Buffalo as well.
Sept. 13: vs. Arizona
While the Niners swept the young Cardinals a year ago, one of those wins was a narrow three-point victory. I expect Frisco to be ready for Kyler Murray and an improved Arizona Cardinals team in their regular season and home opener. Win.
Sept. 20: at New York Jets
I really like Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, but the young signal-caller will mostly be running for his life in this Week 2 mismatch. Win.
Sept. 27: at New York Giants
Somebody, anybody, please tell me the name of the new Giants head coach! Win.
Oct. 4: vs. Philadelphia
The Niners are back at home where I expect them to get the hard-fought win against the Philadelphia Eagles by shutting down their rushing attack and making them one-dimensional. Win.
Oct. 11: vs. Miami
No, Tua Tagovailoa won’t be on the field for the Miami Dolphins in this Week 5 inter-conference clash and that’s a good things as the Niners maul Ryan Fitzpatrick for the home victory in this one. Win.
Oct. 18: vs. Los Angeles Rams
Frisco makes it three straight over the rams by taking care of business at home in this NFC West division rivalry. Win.
Oct. 25: at New England
The 49ers pound Jarrett Stidham into submission, but winning in New England won’t feel as important without Tom Brady on the other sideline. Win.
Nov. 1: at Seattle
The Niners beat Seattle at home last season, but they won’t this time around as Russell Wilson stars in this division showdown. Loss.
Nov. 5: vs. Green Bay
The Packers failure to give Aaron Rodgers the help he needs on offense this offseason will be the reason why the Green Bay Packers fall in Week 9. Win.
Nov. 15: at New Orleans
Drew Brees is infinitely better than Jimmy G. New Orleans take care of business down in the Big Easy to get the win. Loss.
Nov. 22: Bye
Nov. 29: at Los Angeles Rams
The Rams failed to improve their roster this offseason and that’s why they’ll lose a close affair at home in this Week 12 NFC West clash. Win.
Dec. 7: vs. Buffalo
Jimmy G outplays Josh Allen as the Niners squeak past the Buffalo Bills in a low-scoring affair! Win.
Dec. 13: vs. Washington
The new-look Redskins won’t go down easily, but the Niners harass young quarterback Dwayne Haskins into a pair of costly turnovers to get the win. Win.
Dec. 20: at Dallas
While I’m not expecting Dallas to necessarily be ‘better’ than San Francisco in 2020, I think the Niners are going to be due for a loss in this affair as Dallas locks in from the outset to get the win. Loss.
Dec. 26 or 27: at Arizona
After falling on the road at Dallas, San Francisco suffers another big loss, this time on the road against Kyler Murray and a dangerous Cardinals team that has improved immensely since Week 1. Loss.
Jan. 3: vs. Seattle
The San Francisco 49ers will be locked in at home in their regular season finale. After suffering a Week 8 road loss against the Seahawks, the Niners get upset in their finale as Russell Wilson outplays Jimmy Garoppolo for the second time! Loss.
Overall Analysis and Prediction
I’ve got the Niners taking a slight step backwards from 13 wins a year ago to finish with 11 victories in 2020. I’m expecting an improved Seahawks team to narrowly beat out the Niners for division supremacy in the NFC West, even though Frisco’s chances of repeating as NFC champions looks as good as any top conference title contender. In the end, I’m thinking San Francisco is going to need an upgrade over Jimmy G. at quarterback at some point in the near future.
2020 Prediction: 11-5
