Analysis

The New York Jets bagged their second straight win by getting past Jacksonville 23-20 one week after they nearly shut out Miami 20-6 and now they’ll take on a Cleveland Browns team that fell to 0-4 on the season by getting all kinds of smacked around in their emphatic 31-7 Week 4 loss against AFC North rival Cincinnati. Browns’ rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer has struggled mightily the last couple of weeks and now head coach Hue Jackson could go with Kevin Hogan moving forward with the former Stanford star looking pretty solid when he’s been forced to play this season. Despite ranking a modest 21st in scoring and points allowed, the Jets have been pleasantly surprised and clearly, have the best quarterback on the field in this game in veteran Josh McCown. If you want to ‘keep it simple’ here then back the Jets as one of your NFL Week 5 SU Picks to get it done on the road. Pick: New York Jets

Tennessee Titans (2-2) at Miami Dolphins (1-2)

Analysis

Sure, Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans got beat in every way possible in their humbling 57-14 Week 4 loss against Houston, not to mention the fact that Mariota might not suit up for this contest after injuring his hamstring in the loss to the Texans. Still, I like the Titans to easily get past a Miami Dolphins team that has looked completely incompetent under the direction of Jay Cutler in scoring a grand total of six points over the last two weeks including their 20-0 shutout loss against New Orleans on Sunday. Titans are one of the safest NFL Week 5 SU Picks. I don’t know how else to say it except that Miami clearly made a poor choice by bringing Cutler out of retirement when a guy like Colin Kaepernick is easily available. The Titans are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games on grass while Miami has gone 6-13 ATS in their last 19 home games and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record. Miami will have a better shot to win this game if Mariota doesn’t play, but I’ll still take the Titans and veteran backup Matt Cassel as one of your NFL Week 5 SU Picks. Pick: Tennessee Titans

Arizona Cardinals (2-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (3-1)

  • When: Sunday, October 8, 2017, 1:00 PM ET
  • Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • NFL Odds: Philadelphia -6.5
  • Total: 44.5

  • Cardinals are 4-2 SU in their last 6 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 8 of Arizona’s last 11 games
  • Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games
  • Eagles are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 7 of Philadelphia’s last 9 games

Analysis

I know the Arizona Cardinals picked up an exciting 18-15 overtime win against San Francisco this past Sunday to improve to 2-2 on the season, but clearly, veteran signal-caller Carson Palmer is receding faster than my hairline and that’s no joke. Seriously, Arizona has been a huge letdown for me through four games after I picked them in the preseason to rebound and contend in the NFC. Conversely, I’ve been encouraged by what I see coming out of Philadelphia with Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles never quitting in any game and showing that same fortitude I’m talking about to get past the Los Angeles Chargers in their 26-24 win on Sunday just as I predicted. Arizona is 2-6 ATS in its last eight road games while Philadelphia has gone 4-1 ATS in their last five Week 5 games. Forget the key trends though, right now Philadelphia is playing with passion and desire while Arizona looks uninterested and lethargic, starting with Palmer. Back the Eagles to hold it down at home in this intriguing Week 5 matchup. Pick: Philadelphia Eagles
