Olympic Men’s Soccer Tournament Betting Preview

Mexico vs Brazil

  • When: Tuesday, August 3rd
  • Time: 4:00 a.m. ET

Mexico and South Korea produced a thrilling quarter-finals match on Saturday, which ended in favor of Mexico, who won 6-3. As a reward for their phenomenal showing last time out, Mexico earned a clash with Brazil in the semi-finals.

Brazil made it to the semi-finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a narrow 1-0 victory against Egypt, having previously beaten Saudi Arabia (3-1) and Germany (4-2). Although Brazil performed well, their road to the final four wasn’t as exciting, at least relative to what Mexico have produced in Japan.

Mexico have racked 14 goals so far this tournament, and we can be sure they won’t fear taking on Brazil here. At the same time, it’s hard to undervalue Brazil and their strength in the final third, where they field the likes of Richarlison and Cunha.

While Mexico have been very efficient in scoring goals, their defense was lacking. They have managed only one clean sheet this tournament, and even that came against South Africa, who they beat 3-0.

Mexico have been phenomenal and deserve to have made it this far; however, it’s unlikely that they’ll manage to upset Brazil’s all-around quality and experience. You can side with Brazil at +110, which is a solid bet; however, given how potent these two teams have been in the final third, a bet on both teams to score makes more sense.

 Prediction: Both Teams To Score

Japan vs Spain

  • When: Tuesday, August 3rd
  • Time: 7:00 a.m. ET

Japan progressed into the semi-finals following a win against New Zealand, who they beat via a penalty shootout. On the other side, Spain beat Ivory Coast in a highly entertaining affair, where La Roja scored three goals in extra time to secure a 5-2 victory.

It wasn’t a particularly clean performance from Spain. They were 1-2 down in the 90’+1 minute when it seemed like they would be heading out of the tournament. However, Spain rallied and scored a late 90’+3 equalizer, eventually edging out a victory in the added time.

Even though Spain were nearly eliminated, their exceptional performance in the extra time should serve as a massive morale boost as they look to secure a spot in the Olympics finals. That said, Spain will need to show a lot of patience for this match, knowing how solid the Japanese have been in the back.

Japan’s national soccer team conceded only one goal across the tournament, and even that came against Mexico, who have proven to be extremely effective with the ball. Solid numbers on paper; however, Japan hasn’t faced a team as stacked as Spain since 2012, when they upset Spain 1-0 at the London Summer Olympics.

Spain are expected to dictate the tempo in this bout, and they’ll likely want to make the most out of Japan’s fatigue following their exhausting meeting with New Zealand. That, combined with the talent Spain have in the attack – Dani Olmo, Mikel Oyarzabal, Marco Asensio – should be enough for a comfortable win for the La Roja.

Prediction: Spain to win
