Let’s start things off by taking a look at the women’s tournament, as that would appear to be the easiest to predict. Serena Williams is the overwhelming favorite to win gold, and this really is her tournament to lose. Her toughest match would likely come in the semi-final, where she will probably have to face off against Garbine Muguruza. This is one that Serena should win, and that would most likely mean a gold medal match against Angelique Kerber, who is the favorite to come out of the other side of the draw. I’d take Serena here. The men’s Olympic tennis tournament would seem destined for a Novak Djokovic versus Andy Murray final. The Serbian is the betting odds favorite, but it’s hard to bet against Murray, who made it to three Grand Slam Finals this year, and who is coming off a win at Wimbledon. My money would be on Murray.

On the men’s side, Brazil came in as the favorite, but they have looked pretty anemic on offense, having tied 0-0 in their first 2 games. That may open things up for a dark horse team to emerge, and for me that would be Nigeria. The Nigerians had plane troubles on their way to Rio, and arrived an hour or so before their opening game against Japan was due to begin. They managed to win that one 5-4 in an absolute thriller, and then followed that up with a 1-0 win over Sweden. For me, they are the team to keep an eye on. On the women’s side of things, it looks as though we are shaping up for a USA versus Brazil showdown, as those are the two teams who seem to be looking the best at the moment. I would also keep an eye on Canada, as they too have been finding a way to win though their opening two games. Brazil are the biggest threat for the American women, and are going to be tough to beat on home soil. I still give the slight edge to the US.
