Women’s Olympic Soccer Winning Favorites

Written by on August 2, 2016

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil will undoubtedly get a big, colorful opening on Friday night, but you don’t have to wait until then to get a little bit of Olympic fever. The action on the men’s and women’s side of the Olympic soccer tournament get underway before the opening ceremonies start. We have already discussed the potential winner of the men’s tournament, so now let’s shift our focus to the women, whose opening set of games will get underway on Wednesday, August 3rd. There is a chance that history might be made at these games, and it will be up to the US ladies to decide whether or not that happens. Let’s take a closer look at the gold medal favorites, as well as their current betting odds.

Women’s Olympic Soccer Winning Favorites

USA (-120)

The American women, who just happen to be the current World Champions, come into this tournament as the form betting favorites. It’s no real surprise given the amount of talent that they have available to them. Carli Lloyd, Ale Morgan, and Hope Solo are just 3 of the many household names that will be taking the field for the US, and they have a squad that is deeper than any other team at this tournament. The US women have a chance to make history by becoming the first female team to win an Olympic gold after winning the World Cup.

Germany (+250)

If any team is going to prevent history being made, it is Germany. The Germans lost to the US in the semi-finals of the World Cup, and will be out looking for revenge. They have lost a number of key players through retirement since that tournament, but have looked very strong in their build-up for this one. They have won their last three outings by a combined score of 19-0, which tells you that they are ready to go for gold.

Brazil (+500)

The Brazilians will have the advantage of playing on home turf, and will also have one of the best players in the world with Marta leading the line. This is a team that has never won a major tournament, but they have made it to the final on 3 separate occasions. They have a legitimate shot at getting onto the podium if Marta can play how we have come to expect her to.

France (+525)

This will only be the second Olympic appearance for the French women at the Olympic Games, but don’t let that fool you, this is a very talented team. If this team needs any more inspiration than just winning gold, it will be to win a tournament for Louisa Necib. She has been the face of women’s soccer in France for many years now, and she just recently announced that the Olympics would be her final international appearance. If you are looking for a couple of potential dark horses to get on the podium at this tournament, then I would suggest taking a look at Canada (+1000) and Australia (+1200). Both are unlikely to win, but do have the ability to make some noise.
