France

The French boast a squad that is the envy of just about every other team in the world, but they more often than not lack the attitude to match their talent. Paul Pogba is the leader of an enigmatic group of players who often seem more interested in being anywhere other than on the football field, but when this team focuses and plays at its best, they are tough to stop. This is a group that they should win without any real trouble, but a draw at home against Luxembourg in qualifying shows that France is capable of playing down to the level of their opponent. This is the first time in 36 years that Peru will be at the World Cup. That’s the good news. The bad is that they will be without the services of Paolo Guerrero, who received a 14-month suspension for PED use. It looked for a long time as though Peru would not get anywhere close to Russia, but a late run in the CONMEBOL qualifying group saw them move up from 8th to the crucial 5th place, which meant automatic qualification. The Danes made it to the World Cup after beating the Republic of Ireland 5-1 on aggregate in a playoff game. This is a big team that often plays the most direct route to the goal via the long ball, but they are also blessed with some skill in the middle of the park. Christian Eriksen is the man that can make it all tick, as he is as adept at scoring big goals as he is at making brilliant passes to his big forwards. Denmark is going to need to stay tight and compact at the back, although given their weakness at the full-back positions, they could be vulnerable to wing play.
