New MLS Playoffs format in 2019

Major League Soccer simplified it’s playoff format for 2019. First, there will be 14 teams instead of 12. Second, only a single team per conference will get a Round 1 bye. Finally, and most importantly, there is no reseeding after each round.

So, if the sixth seed beats the 3 seed, the sixth seed continues in the same bracket. Finally, the MLS Championship Cup Playoffs is a single elimination tournament. It takes only a single bad game for the top seeds to get knocked out.

If the playoffs were to start today, here are the 14 teams that would be seeded in the West and East:

East

  1. New York City FC
  2. Philadelphia Union
  3. Atlanta United FC
  4. Toronto FC
  5. DC United
  6. New York Red Bulls
  7. New England Revolution

West

  1. Los Angeles FC
  2. Seattle Sounders
  3. Minnesota United FC
  4. Real Salt Lake
  5. L.A. Galaxy
  6. San Jose Earthquakes
  7. FC Dallas

Which team offers the most value, New York City FC? Or, Los Angeles FC?

Neither. Los Angeles FC appears to offer value because they only have 4 losses on the season. However, LAFC also has 7 draws, which means they were close to losing 7 other games. The 19 wins, so far, are impressive, but MLS doesn’t play an aggregate in their playoffs. So, a single loss will send LAFC to the sidelines.

Same goes for New York FC. Although their odds are much better at +500, they too must win 3 matches in a row. The bye helps both New York City FC and LAFC, but the bye doesn’t ensure 3 straight victories. Only back either one of the chalks if you really believe.

What teams from +1200 to +3300 odds have the best chance of winning the 2019 MLS Cup?

As of Sep. 19 in the West, Seattle, Minnesota, Real Salt Lake, and the L.A. Galaxy are all sitting on 14 wins. In the East, Atlanta has 16 and Philadelphia has 15. Atlanta won the MLS Cup in 2018.

The ATL United aren’t in great form right now. The playoffs don’t start for a month, though. They might start ratcheting it up right before the playoffs. The defending champs offer really good odds. The single elimination format will also help them. Take the current champs seriously.

Philadelphia and Seattle should also be taken seriously. The Philly Union only have 8 losses on the season. In their last 3 matches, they’ve beaten both DC United and Atlanta 3-1. They drew 1-1 with LAFC. It means Philadelphia has built momentum. If they can keep it going, they’ll be tough in the postseason.

Seattle has 9 losses as of Sep. 19. The Sounders haven’t played as well as Philadelphia, but they have a lot of experience. They know when to play for a draw and when to go for the victory. Seattle could strategize their way to an upset West victory.

All three teams: Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Seattle must win 4 games in a row to take the championship. All 3 are capable of doing that.

Are there any teams at odds higher than +3300 worth considering to win the 2019 Major League Soccer Championship?

It’s difficult to find a team offering huge odds because they must get into the field of 7 in their respective conference. Montreal has 16 losses. They’re in eighth place in the East, though, with 37 points. If they make the Top 7, they make the playoffs, which means they’ll have a shot. They’re worth a flyer wager if you’re looking to score huge money with a small investment.

Sporting KC has 37 points. They’re 6 points behind Portland for the seventh seed in the West. Kansas City probably won’t make the playoffs. But, they only have 13 losses with 10 wins and 7 draws. If Kansas City manages to make the postseason field, they could surprise at big odds.
