2020 Major League Soccer Tournament

Instead of having a truncated regular season, Major League Soccer decided to go right to their playoffs. MLS is calling it a tournament.

In soccer, tournaments happen all the time. Most tournaments follow the pattern that MLS set out for themselves.

Teams are placed in groups. Those groups are assigned a letter. Group A, as an example, includes Orlando, Philadelphia, and NYCFC, or New York City Football Club.

The top 2 teams from each group move on to the Round of 16. In the 2020 Major League Soccer Tournament, not only will the top 2 teams from each group move to the Round of 16, but the next 4 highest-ranked teams after qualifying will also move on to the Round of 16.

That’s because MLS could only take 12 teams from 6 groups.

MLS is Back Tournament Bracket Update

Group play during the tournament lasts from July 8 through July 23. Then from July 23 to early August, Major League Soccer has their Round of 16, tournament quarterfinals, and semifinals.

The semifinals are on August 6. The 2020 Major League Soccer Tournament Finals happen on August 11.

The following teams have moved on to the Round of 16:

  • Group A: Orlando and Philadelphia
  • Group B: Toronto FC and New England
  • Group C: Sporting KC and Minnesota
  • Group D: None
  • Group E: Columbus
  • Group F: San Jose

As you can see, there’s a lot yet to be decided. LAFC, Los Angeles Football Club, entered the tournament as the favorites. Yet, LAFC has yet to secure their position in the Round of 16.

In fact, with just 4 qualifying days left, the Major League Soccer Tournament has filled just 8-of-16 spots. That makes this week an exciting one for soccer handicappers.
