With the 2020 French Open main draw getting underway on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, now is a perfect time to offer up some expert online tennis betting predictions on my top five picks to win both, the women’s WTA portion and men’s ATP side – of the year’s third and final grand slam event. With both fields almost, but not fully, loaded, let’s get started so you can place your bets against their French Open odds.

The Top 5 Men & Women to Back in the 2020 French Open

Women’s WTA French Open Picks

• No. 5 Jelena Ostapenko +3000

Currently ranked 41st in the world, Jelena Ostapenko has had a rough go of it the last couple of years. Still, the fearless Latvia native is just 23-years-old and she’s got the knowledge that she won this grand slam event in 2017. Yes, she’s been bounced out of Roland Garros in the first round in each of the last two years, but, again, she’s young and strong – and she’ll be motivated no doubt, making her my No. 5 pick to pull off the French Open upset.

• No. 4 Serena Williams +900

Just days shy of her 38th birthday, Williams has won this event three times in her legendary career (2002, 2013, 2015). While she got knocked out in the third round last year and the fourth round in 2018, she’ll be hungry to get her record-tying 24th grand slam title. While Williams isn’t one of my top three picks, I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised to see her pull out another career-defining win at Roland Garros this year.

• No. 3 Victoria Azarenka +950

While Azarenka has never won a French Open – or reached the finals for that matter, her recent resurgence has me believing the 2020 U.S. Open finalist could make her most impressive run at Roland Garros this year. Still just 31-years-old, Azarenka is 22-12 all-time at Roland Garros and will be as motivated as ever after getting back to the upper echelon of the women’s WTA Tour.

• No. 2 Garbine Muguruza +650

While Muguruza hasn’t won a major since she claimed the 2017 Wimbledon title, the powerful Spaniard is still, just 26-years-old and in the midst of her prime. More importantly, Muguruza has gone an impressive  27-6 all-time at Roland Garros while winning the French Open in 2016 and reaching the semis in 2018.Muguruza has reached the fourth round or better in each of the last three years on the red clay.

• No. 1 Simona Halep +200

The 28-year-old world No. 2 is the prohibitive favorite – and my top pick to take home the French Open hardware. The diminutive, but fiery, Halep has gone a stellar 28-9 all-time at Roland Garros while winning the title in 2018 and reaching the finals in 2014 and 2017. Halep reached the quarterfinals last year and is the best clay court player in the world today.

Men’s ATP French Open Picks

• No. 5 Stan Wawrinka +2500

I don’t care that Wawrinka is now 35-years-old. The fact of the matter is that Stan The Man’ has gone 42-14 all-time at Roland Garros and has reached the quarters or better at Roland Garros in four of the last five years, including his title win back in 2015 – where he dispatched Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic en route to the title. He’ll undoubtedly have a chance to make another deep run this year.

• No. 4 Alexander Zverev +1800

The current world No. 7  has gone a modest 10-4 all-time at Roland Garros, but the 23-year-old German comes into this year’s event fresh off a run to the finals at the recently-completed U.S. Open, not to mention the fact that he’s made consecutive appearances in the quarterfinals on the red clay. I like Zverev’s chances, even if no one is mentioning him as a real contender.

• No. 3 Rafael Nadal

I know the incomparable Rafal Nadal has gone a spectacular 93-2 all-time at Roland Garros while winning a mind-boggling 12 titles, but for me, something feels different about Rafa’s chances this year. Nadal got smacked around by the diminutive Diego Schwartzman in the recently completed Italian Open and he hasn’t had much competitive play on clay this year like he normally does. Not only is Nadal not my pick to win this year’s French Open, but he’s not my No. 2 pick either.

• No. 2 Novak Djokovic

Speaking of my No. 2 pick, I’m going with world No.1 Novak Djokovic to reach this year’s finals. The super consistent Serbian has gone a stupendous 68-14 all-time at Roland Garros while making six straight runs to the semis or better from 2011 to 2016 with four finals appearances.

Djokovic won the recently completed Italian Open and he’ll be motivated to get the win after missing out on winning grand slam No. 18 to pull within one of Nadal and two of all-time record holder Roger Federer.

• No. 1 Dominic Thiem

The first thing you need to know about Thiem is that he’s generally been regarded as the second-best clay court player in the world for a couple of years now. The 27-year-old Austrian has gone a stellar 24-6 all-time at Roland Garros while reaching each of the last two French Open finals. After winning the recently completed U.S. Open, I believe Thiem is poised to beat out Rafa – and everyone else – in route to his second straight grand slam title!
