Expert Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – May 7th

While there are a couple of different tournaments on the go this week, it is the Madrid Open in Spain that is going to be getting our full tennis betting attention. Both the men and women will be taking to the clay between now and Sunday, with the tournament already underway. The opening round games went off over the weekend, and based on the latest ATP & WTA odds we are going to look at both the men’s and women’s tournaments to see if we can come up with a winner for each, so let’s get right to it.

Expert Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – May 7th

Madrid Open Men’s Tournament

  • Category: Masters 1000
  • Draw: 48S / 24Q / 16D
  • Prize money: €6,408,230

ATP’s Top 10

  • 1-Rafael Nadal
  • 2-Roger Federer
  • 3-Alexander Zverev
  • 4-Grigor Dimitrov
  • 5-Marin Cilic
  • 6-Juan Martin del Potro
  • 7-Dominic Thiem
  • 8-Kevin Anderson
  • 9-John Isner
  • 10-David Goffin

The men’s game has probably not been this wide-open in quite some time, with many of the top players either out through injury or trying to make their way back. This has left Rafael Nadal as the man to beat in just about every event he enters, so it’s perhaps no real surprise that he is in as the top seed for this one. Nadal, the current champion, has won this event 4 times since 2010, and 5 times overall, so this is obviously an event that he likes.

Novak Djokovic, who has won here twice, would appear to be the obvious threat to Nadal, but he has struggled to make any sort of impact since returning from injury. The quarter-finals may be as far as the big Croatian goes here. Looking at the draw, I would think that Kei Nishikori may well be the man who makes it to the final to face Nadal, although Juan Martin del Potro may be able to upset the apple cart a little. Nishikori does have a history at this event, losing to Nadal in the final back in 2014, so a repeat of that one does not seem out of the question.

It’s really tough to bet against Nadal given the current state of the men’s game, so that is where I will be going with my tennis betting pick for this one.

Madrid Open Women’s Tournament

  • Category: Premier Mandatory
  • Draw: 64S / 32Q / 28D
  • Prize money: US$5,439,350

WTA’s Top 10

  • 1-Simona Halep
  • 2-Carolina Wozniacki
  • 3-Garbiñe Muguruza
  • 4-Elina Svitolina
  • 5-Jelena Ostapenko
  • 6-Karolina Pliskova
  • 7-Caroline Garcia
  • 8-Venus Williams
  • 9-Sloane Stephens
  • 10-Petra Kvitova

On the women’s side, it is Simona Halep who is the player to beat. She has been great at this tournament, making in the final in 3 of the last 4 years and winning it in 2016 and 2017. She does not have an easy path to the final, though, with Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza on her side of the draw. My feeling is that it will be Muguruza that she faces in the semi-final, a match-up I like Halep to win on clay.

Jelena Ostapenko is a Tennis Betting pick to consider for this week's action.

In the bottom half of the draw, I have my eye on an up and coming young player who could do some damage in this tournament. I am talking about Carolina Garcia, who I think has a legitimate shot at making it to the semi-final. The player that I think she will face is Jelena Ostapenko, although she is going to need to get past Carolina Wozniacki to make that happen.

I am going with Halep and Ostapenko to be in the final in what should be a fantastic match-up. I hate to keep playing the chalk, but Halep’s history in this tournament makes here a clear and obvious choice, which is why I am going with her to win again.
