The Orange Bowl has been played annually since January 1, 1935 and along with the Sugar Bowl and the Sun Bowl, the game is currently the second-oldest bowl game in the nation (Right behind the Rose Bowl, first played 1902 and played annually since 1916). The Orange Bowl was part of the old Bowl Championship Series (BCS), serving as the BCS National Championship Game in 2001 and 2005. However, the BCS was replaced by the current College Football Playoff starting in 2014.
The inaugural game saw Bucknell beating Miami 26-0. In its many decades of tradition, the Orange Bowl has hosted 20 National Champions at its games and 17 Heisman Trophy winners. Some of the most iconic matches played include Miami’s epic 30-31 Miami win over Nebraska and the 1965 Texas win over national champion Alabama when legendary QB Joe Namath was stopped inches short of the goal line on a crucial fourth down play, in the first major sporting event ever televised live in prime time.
The underdog has covered the college football betting line in each of the last three meetings – and four of the last five overall – by winning outright against their favored opponents.
In the 2015 Capital One Orange Bowl, which also served as one of two college football playoff semifinals, the Clemson Tigers rolled all over the Oklahoma Sooners en route to a commanding 37-17 win as a 4-point underdog while the game’s 54 combined points played Under the 62-point O/U Total.
Clemson has appeared in three of the last five Orange Bowl games, beating Ohio State in 2-13 and losing to West Virginia 70-33 in 2011. Nebraska has made the most appearances in this game by going 8-9 in 17 Orange Bowl matchups. The Over is 3-2 in the last five Orange bowls and 2-1 in the last three.
