Series HistoryLouisiana and Tulane played a grueling four-overtime game in 2016, where the Green Wave earned a 44-39 victory on Sept. 24. Tulane holds a 22-4 all-time mark with the series going back to 1911. For the second time in program history, Louisiana and Tulane will meet in a bowl game, having met in the 2013 New Orleans Bowl.
Why Bet on Tulane? The Green Wave’s Cure Bowl invitation came after they finished with a 4-1 record to close out the year. Tulane’s finish to end the regular season was its best record in its final five games since 1998. Tulane (6-6) only got bowl eligible with a 29-28 win over Navy in its regular-season finale. Justin McMillan connected with Jaetavian Toles for a 26-yard touchdown with 1:27 left, passed back across the field to Charles Jones for the 2-point conversion, and Tulane avoided a devastating collapse with the win to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2013. The game-winning score completed a seven-play series that covered 71 yards in 2:11. It came in direct response to Tazh Maloy’s 9-yard TD run, which capped a string of 25 straight points that turned Navy’s 21-3 halftime deficit into a late, 28-21 lead. Tulane enters the bowl with an interim offensive coordinator after Doug Ruse was fired at the end of the regular season. The Green Wave rank No. 93 in the nation in scoring, averaging 25.7 points per game. Junior running back Darius Bradwell has amassed 1,000 yards on 166 carries while scoring a team-high nine touchdowns. Senior quarterback Justin McMillan went 18-for-29 for 291 yards and three touchdowns in the bowl-clinching victory against Navy. He has totaled 1,159 yards and nine touchdowns in eight games played. The new full-time OC Is Will Hall, who spent this season as associate head coach at Memphis. During his lone season at Memphis, Hall helped guide the Tigers to a school record with 42 rushing touchdowns during the regular season. In addition, Memphis finished the regular season with 3,311 rushing yards, setting a new school record. Tulane’s defense is better overall (27.8 PPG, 5.61 YPP) the ULL’s but its flaws will render it vulnerable against ULL. The Green Wave have allowed 33 plays of 30-plus yards to opposing offenses this season, more than all but 22 other teams. This will be Tulane’s 12th all-time bowl game, and the team holds a 4-7 record in bowl games lifetime. It is the first time Tulane has played in a bowl game outside the state of Louisiana since 2002 when it took part in the Hawaii Bowl.
Why Bet on Louisiana-Lafayette?Louisiana-Lafayette surpassed preseason expectations with its 7-6 record and a trip to the Sun Belt conference championship, where it lost 30-19 to Appalachian State. Four of the Ragin’ Cajuns six losses were to a 10-2 Appalachian State team (twice — once in the regular season and again in the league title game), Mississippi State (56-10 in Week 3) and Alabama (56-14 in Week 5). Sophomore Elijah Mitchell, second-team All-Sun Belt at running back, is a big-play threat for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the same backfield as third-team all-league pick Trey Ragas, the workhorse who has topped 1,000 yards on the ground. If Mitchell runs for at least 41 yards against Tulane, Louisiana will have its second 1,000-yard rusher on the season. Mitchell would join Ragas, who enters the bowl game sitting at 1,141 rushing yards this season, in the 1,000-yard club. Quarterback Andre Nunez is 174-for-270 for 2,136 yards with 19 touchdowns. A team-high 10 touchdowns have been caught by junior wide receiver Ja’Marcus Bradley, who has totaled 557 yards on 38 receptions. If the Cure Bowl comes down to the wire, the Ragin’ Cajuns have the edge in the kicking game. Oklahoma transfer Kyle Pfau was second in the Sun Belt in made FG percentage this season, knocking through 14 of 17 attempts (82.5%). Pfau had a 4-for-4 performance in the Sun Belt Championship in which he nailed a 45-yard kick. Louisiana is making its eighth bowl appearance and the first outside the Pelican State since the 1944 Oil Bowl in Houston.
