Updated 2019 College Basketball Championship Odds – April 2nd
After becoming the first No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament history to lose to a No. 16 seed a year ago, the Virginia Cavaliers are back and poised to make history of a different kind of history as they look to win the first men’s college basketball national championship in school history. While Virginia is now the prohibitive favorite to bring home the hardware this year, there are a trio of other legitimate championship hopefuls that all look like they’re going to have a decent chance to claim this year’s national championship.

Let’s take a look at the latest odds to win the 2019 national championship.
Virginia Cavaliers
- 2019 College Basketball Championship Odds: +160
- Record: 33-3
- Road to the Final Four:
- Gardner-Webb, 71-56
- Oklahoma, 63-51
- Oregon 53-49
- Purdue 80-75 (OT)
- Head Coach: Tony Bennett (252-89 in 10 seasons at Virginia, 320-122 overall)
- National Championships: 0
- Final Fours Appearances: Three (1981, 1984, 2019)
- Leading scorer: Kyle Guy (15.2)
Analysis
No. 1 seeded Virginia has used its powerful defense to hold three of its tourney opponents to 56 points or less and the Cavs came up big against Purdue to get past the Boilermakers 80-75 in overtime in the Elite Eight. Virginia’s defense limits the opposition to a mind-boggling 55.4 points per game and the Cavaliers just force teams into ugly performances more often than not by packing the paint and contesting any three-point shot. Virginia has won nine of its last 10 games while allowing just one opponent to top the 70-point plateau.
- Cavaliers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games.
- Cavaliers are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games following a ATS win.
- Cavaliers are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 Saturday games.
Michigan State Spartans
- 2019 College Basketball Championship Odds: +175
- Record: 32-6
- Road to the Final Four:
- Bradley, 76-65
- Minnesota, 70-50
- LSU, 80-63
- Duke 68-67
- Head Coach: Tom Izzo (606-231 in 24 seasons at Michigan State)
- National Championships: 2 (2000, 1979)
- Final Four Appearances: 10 (seasons above plus 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2001, 1999, 1957)
- Leading scorer: Cassius Winston (18.8)
Analysis
No. 2 seed Michigan State has the look of a team that isn’t going to be dispatched easily, if at all. The Spartans have a solid, but not explosive offense, that puts up 78.3 points per game and a defense that is far above average in limiting the opposition to just 65.1 points per contest to rank 34th nationally in points allowed. More importantly, Michigan State has a Hall of Fame head coach that has been there and done that and they’ve got a heady point guard that plays virtually mistake-free basketball in Big Ten Player of the Year Cassius Winston (18.9 ppg, 7.6 apg). The Spartans have some decent size in the frontcourt (Nick Ward and Xavier Tillman) and some nice balance with seven players all averaging double digits in minutes played. Still, while they’re favored to beat Texas Tech in the Final Four, I wouldn’t deem the Spartans as locks by any stretch of the imagination.
- Spartans are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
- Spartans are 21-5 ATS in their last 26 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
- Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
- Spartans are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 games following a straight up win.
- Spartans are 26-9 ATS in their last 35 games overall.

Texas Tech Red Raiders
- 2019 College Basketball Championship Odds: +400
- Record: 30-6
- Road to the Final Four:
- Northern Kentucky, 72-57
- Buffalo, 78-58
- Michigan 63-44
- Gonzaga 75-69
- Head Coach: Chris Beard (75-30 in three seasons at Texas Tech, 171-60 overall)
- National Championships: 0
- Final Fours Appearances: First
- Leading scorer: Jarrett Culver (18.9)
Analysis
While Virginia gets the lion’s share of national media attention for their powerful defense, make no mistake about it, No. 3 seed Texas Tech plays some hellacious defense that can rival anyone’s. The Red Raiders completely shut down top-seeded Gonzaga and their national-leading offense en route to a stunning 75-69 win in the Elite Eight. Texas Tech was even more impressive in holding Michigan to a NCAA Tournament school-record low 44 points in the Sweet 16 and they’ve only allowed more than 70 points three times in their last 10 games. Last but not least, Texas Tech has a sure-fire first round NBA Draft pick leading them in sophomore shooting guard Jarrett Culver. The quickly rising NBA Draft prospect led the team in scoring (18.9), rebounds (6.4) and assists (3.8) per game to earn Big 12 Player of the Year honors.
- Red Raiders are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games.
- Red Raiders are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big Ten.
- Red Raiders are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
- Red Raiders are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
Auburn Tigers
- 2019 College Basketball Championship Odds: +700
- Record: 30-9
- Road to the Final Four:
- New Mexico State, 78-77
- Kansas, 89-75
- North Carolina, 97-80
- Kentucky, 77-71 (OT)
- Head Coach: Bruce Pearl (100-71 in five seasons at Auburn, 562-216 overall)
- National Championships: 0
- Final Four Appearances: First
- Leading scorer: Bryce Brown (15.8)
Analysis
No. 5 seed Auburn has won 10 straight games dating back to the regular season, so the SEC title hopefuls are clearly red-hot right now. The Tigers like to push the pace under head coach Bruce Pearl and they average 80.2 points per game to rank 28th in scoring nationally. Auburn has scored 77 points or more in all four of their tournament games while putting an insane 97 points on the board against top-seeded North Carolina in the Sweet 16.
- Tigers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win.
- Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
- Tigers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
- Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games.
