The Favorite – Rory McIlroy (+700)

McIlroy hasn’t played since the Masters and drew some criticism for skipping subsequent events, especially after he was so vocal about the PGA Tour increasing prize purses for tournaments to contend with LIV Golf. The rest may help McIlroy, as he was playing quite poorly before missing the cut at the Masters.

The four-time major champion has also enjoyed great success at Quail Hollow. He won here in 2021 for the third time with a one-stroke victory over Abraham Ancer. He won by a record seven strokes in 2015 and won for the first time in 2010. He was also runner-up in 2012 and is second among all players competing this weekend in true shots gained (+2.83) at Quail Hollow, according to DataGolf.com.

The Smart Pick – Viktor Hovland (+1800)

Hovland has just three career victories and has yet to win in 2022-23, despite seemingly in contention every weekend. He’s a greater starter and is usually leading the field after the first round, but has been unable to play at a high level consistently for four rounds. Foruntately, he has also had success at Quail Hollow.

The 25-year-old Norwegian is the only player with a better true shots gained (+3.26) than McIlroy at the North Carolina course, albeit in only one tournament. Hovland finished T3 in 2021. He’s more than due for a win.

The Longshot Pick – Max Homa (+2800)

While we usually like to highlight a golfer with longer odds, it’s hard to pass on Max Homa this weekend at +2800. He has the 13th-shortest odds, despite being a two-time winner of the Wells Fargo Championship. He’s also the defending champion, although last year’s event was held at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Maryland.

Still, being the defending champion carries some weight, and Homa, like Hovland, is due for another win on the PGA Tour. He had a great start to the season, winning the Farmers Insurance Open and finishing second at the Genesis Open, but was T43 at the Masters and missed the cut for the RBC Heritage.

Homa won the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in 2019 with a three-stoke victory over Joel Dahmen.

Rory McIlroy +850

The returning champion has the best odds this week as he looks to go back-to-back at the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy won the tournament a season ago at 10-under-par. The Wells Fargo was one of two wins for McIlroy last season.

He is currently ranked seventh in the world and is making his 8th start this season. McIlroy has three top-10 finishes with one being a 2nd place finish. McIlroy also has missed one cut.

McIlroy has +850 odds to win the event which is almost half of the next best odds. Like last week, McIlroy would be an easy pick as was Rahm. McIlroy has not played since his second place finish at The Masters.

Corey Conners +1600

Corey Conners is off to a great start this season his 11 starts. While he has only finished in the top-10 twice, Conners has been hanging around the top-10 all season. He has one missed cut as well in his 11 starts.

Conners holds the second-best odds at +1600. He is looking for his first win since 2019 where he won after Monday qualifying. Conners is coming off a T-6 finish at The Masters and a T-12 finish at the RBC Heritage.

Conners is playing well and seems to be knocking on the door for his second career win. +1600 odds are great this week for Corey Conners.

Tony Finau +2500

This two-time PGA Tour winner is coming off a great week in Mexico. Finau finished T-2 at the Mexico Open with a Sunday 63. Finau has struggled this season but has picked it up last week.

Finau is ranked 18th in the world and this will be his 12th event of the season. In 11 events, Finau has missed three cuts. Last week showed promise to what Finau could bring for the rest of the season.

At +2500 odds, Finau would be a great pickup to add to your bets this week. His +2500 odds is tied for the 7th best odds with Seamus Powers.

Other Odds

Tyrrell Hatton +2000

Hatton is waiting for his breakthrough performance this season. In nine starts he has four top-10 finishes, including a second place finish. Hatton plays on both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour overseas. Hatton is looking for his first win this season. His +2000 odds are third best in the tournament.

Marc Leishman +2000

There are four players who share the +2000 odds and one of them is March Leishman. The Australian has not had the best season in the 2021-22 year. In nine events he has one missed cut and one top-10. This could be a big week for Leishman if he can get out ahead early.

13th in the Official Golf World Rankings (OGWR), Tony Finau looks like a guy due for a win. In 15 events this season, the 31-year-old Utah native has made the cut 13 times while recording six Top-10 finishes and a pair of second place finishes. After missing cut in the Texas Open, Finau rebounded nicely by finishing 10th at last month’s Masters and T17 in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Finau ranks ninth in eagles per hole (86.4), 13th in birdie average (4.44) and 11th in scoring average (69.9). Finau is hungry and talented enough to get it done this weekend.

Will Zalatoris

28th in the OGWR, gifted youngster Will Zalatoris has made the cut 15 times in 16 tournaments this season. The 24-year-old Californian has recorded a stellar six of Top-10 finishes, including at his Masters debut last month. Zalatoris finished 42nd in the RBC Heritage Classic in his last event, but could very well win the 2021 Wells Fargo title. Zalatoris ranks 22nd in greens-in-regulation (69.44%), 26th in eagles, 49th in birdies per round (4.03) and 12th in scoring average (69.9). Make no mistake about it, Zalatoris has the kind of all-around game that is well-suited for success. I see no reason why the blossoming star won’t challenge for the outright win on Sunday.

Justin Thomas

In 13 events this season, Thomas has made the cut 12 times while recording five Top-10 finishes and a win in The Player’s Championship in March. Thomas ranks first in birdies (4.89) and first in scoring average (69.7) while ranking fifth in eagles and 22nd in G.I.R. Thomas finished a solid T13 in last week’s Valspar Championship and looks like a sure-fire pick to finish inside the Top 5.

Xander Schauffele

In 13 events this season, the world No. 4 has made the cut 12 times with six Top-10 finishes. The 27-year-old Californian comes into this event with three consecutive Top-20 finishes, including a T11 finish in last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Schauffele ranks sixth in eagles, a stellar third in birdie average (4.69) and fifth in scoring average (69.8). More importantly, Schauffele is due for a win and I believe he could get it.

Jon Rahm

In 13 events this season, Rahm has made the cut each time out while recording nine Top-10 finishes, including one second place finish. The 26-year-old Spaniard comes into this event riding the wave of a four-tournament stretch of Top-10 finishes, including a seventh place finish in last month’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Rahm ranks fifth in G.I.R., 23rd in birdie average (4.34) and eighth in scoring average (69.8). Another Top-0 finish looks like a certainty while a win looks very, very possible as well.

Which of the favorites has the best chance at winning the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship?

Rory offers +650 odds to win the Wells Fargo this weekend. McIlroy shot a -3 at Quail Hollow last year. That was 9 strokes off Jason Day. Not only that, but McIlroy didn’t play that well at the Masters, finishing twenty-first.

Day deserves a look. He shot a -12 after a 69, 67, 67, 69. However, Jason missed the cut at the Zurich Classic in his last. He’s not hitting the ball particularly well and actually offers underlay odds to repeat at +1000.

The pick among the favorites is Rickie Fowler. Fowler shot a -2 at the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship, but he’s in good form. He hasn’t played since finishing ninth at the Masters. That means he’s been taking his time this month, practicing some shots, and resting up for May. Fowler should have his hot sticks this week. Rickie deserves some consideration to win the Wells Fargo Championship.

Which less than +3300 choice deserves a look?

Ageless Phil Mickelson offers excellent +3000 odds to win the Wells Fargo Championship. Lefty headed into the Masters Tournament having missed the cut at both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship at TPC-Sawgrass. He shot the ball well enough at Augusta to finish in the Top 20 at eighteen.

The real reason to like Phil’s chances this week is because he shot a -7 at last year’s Wells Fargo. Mickelson came on in the final two rounds. He shot a 72 on both Thursday and Friday before shooting a 64 on Saturday and a 69 on Sunday. If he can shoot more consistently this year, he can win.

Are there any golfers at +3300 odds or higher who can win the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship?

Neither Stenson nor Woodland played at Qual Hollow last year. Both are in good enough form to have a say on Sunday, but the player to really consider is Patrick Reed.

Lately, Reed has been terrible. He finished fiftieth at the Arnold Palmer, forty-seventh at TPC-Sawgrass, and missed the cut at the Valspar Championship. In his last two tournaments played, he finished thirty-sixth at the Masters Tournament, and missed the cut at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Although Reed’s been in terrible form, he shot a -6 at the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship. Like Phil Mickelson last year, Reed improved on Saturday and Sunday, a 67 on Saturday and a 69 on Sunday, after shooting 71 on Thursday and Friday. Reed might turn his form around this week. If he does, he’ll pay his backers handsomely at +4000 odds.
