Golf is a little strange in that their season starts at the tail end of a year and carries over into the next. The tournaments played prior to the start of the New Year are usually smaller events that serve as a bit of a warm-up for players. In fact, you will have some guys that choose to sit those out in favor of the bigger tournaments that come when the calendar rolls over. With that in mind, you might wonder why we are starting to look at the majors, which are still months away. The main reason is that you will not get better odds on the top players than what are available now. Sure, it’s a bit of a risky bet, as some guys may be stone cold once the majors roll around, but I think it’s a chance worth taking. Last week, we looked at The Masters, and this time around we are looking at the PGA Championship, which is set to go on May 18-21 at the Oak Hill East Course. Rory McIlroy (+1075)

It’s perhaps a little odd to describe the current FedEx Cup Champion as a bit of a risky bet for this tournament but hear me out. McIlroy has won this tournament twice in the past, but his last win came in 2014. That is not the main reason he is a risky bet, though. It is because the last 7 winners of the PGA Championship have all hailed from the United States. Now, counting the Irishman out because of that run might well be something we come to regret, as this is a player who is arguably in the best form of his career.

Jon Rahm (+1075)

Again, the bookies are looking outside of the US for a potential winner, and you have to say that Rahm is a good place to land. The Spaniard is one of the most consistent players on the tour, but that consistency does not necessarily always translate to wins. Rahm, though, is a guy you can make money on by playing him to land in the top 5 or top 10. Sure, you don’t bank as much money, but he gets there so often that you progressively build your bankroll by sticking with him to be among the leaders at the end of the tournament.

Justin Thomas (+1225)

Now, if you were of the mind to take a chance and get a wager going today on the PGA Championship, this might just be the way to go. Like we mentioned earlier, it has been the Americans who have dominated this tournament of late, so Thomas very much fits the profile with that alone. Add the fact that he has won it twice, including last season, and you have yourself a very good looking pick. The chances of his odds staying this high between now and the start of the tournament seem slim to none to me, and I would be very tempted to slap a few bucks on him at this price.

We’re just about a week away from the start of the PGA Champion. Golf’s second major begins May 18 at Oak Hill East Course and offers a $15 million prize purse in addition to the prestige of winning a major. Jon Rahm won the Masters and is the betting favorite to win at Oak Hill.

It won’t be an easy path to victory for the Spaniard, however, as LIV Golf players will also be competing this weekend. Rahm and Scheffler’s Dominance in 2023

It’s hardly a surprise that Rahm and Scheffler have the shortest odds to win next weekend at Oak Hill. They’re the top-two ranked golfers in the world and have shown an ability to elevate their game in important moments, especially at majors, over the last two years.

In addition to winning the Masters last season, Scheffler has already won twice this year, including at THE PLAYERS, and hasn’t finished worse than T12 since the CJ Cup last October. He was T10 at the Masters, even though it looked as though he was struggling all weekend.

Rahm, meanwhile, has elevated his game to another level after a breakthrough 2022 campaign. He’s already a four-time winner on the PGA Tour this season and could be on his way to an all-time great season if he is to win the PGA Championship. He last played at the Mexico Championship at the end of April and finished second behind Tony Finau.

Why You Should Fade Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth is a player who feels due for another major championship victory, but it’s unlikely to come next weekend at Oak Hill – in fact, it’s not even a guarantee that he’ll play. Spieth recently withdrew from the AT&T Byron Nelson due to a wrist injury. This is particularly noticeable considering the tournament is in his home state of Texas, and he missed the cut last weekend at Wells Fargo.

Best-Value Long Shot Picks

Xander Schauffele (+2200) isn’t exactly a longshot, but he’s a player worth betting on, considering his recent results. He has yet to win a major but has been consistently in contention dating back to last year and has proven the ability to win big tournaments as an Olympic gold medalist. Schauffele finished second in the Wells Fargo Championship and fourth the week prior at the RBC Heritage. He was T10 at the Masters.

Looking further down the board, Tyrrell Hatton (+5200) is a solid option for a longshot bet. He was T3 at Wells Fargo last weekend and T19 at the RBC Heritage two weeks prior. He has two top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship.

The 25-year-old already has a pair of major titles under his belt. Morikawa has played just ten events on Tour this season, with six top-10 finishes. Even though he’s yet to capture a victory on Tour this year, Morikawa took home the DP World Tour Championship in November.

Tiger Woods (+5600)

Tiger’s last PGA Championship victory came at this course in 2007. The four-time holder of the Wanamaker Trophy is a long shot to win, but you can never count out one of the greatest golfers of all time. If Woods tees it up, it’ll be just the second time he does so since his car accident kept him away from competitive golf for over 500 days.

Spieth has a stellar five Top-10 finishes in his last eight outings. Spieth ranks 11th in birdie average (4.42).

Zalatoris finished T42 at the RBC Heritage two weeks back and should be hungry to shoot for a win here. This will be his very first PGA Championship appearance, but look at what he did in his first Masters earlier this month. I’m thinking Zalatoris is good for a Top-10 finish at the very least.

The annual PGA Tour Championship is unlike any other event on the tour, now, let’s find out why. Here is a quick look at the format.

2020 PGA Tour Championship Betting Odds and Predictions

PGA Tour Championship Format

The PGA Tour Championship features a 30-player field that features a strokes-based system, called the FedEx Starting Strokes. This format was instituted for the first time a year ago and selects a winner based on the player with the lowest total score. Here’s how it will work. World No. 1, Dustin Johnson, the FedEx Cup points leader after the first two playoffs events, will begin the TOUR Championship at 10-under par. World No. 2 Jon Rahm will begin at 8-under while No. 3, Justin Thomas opens at 7-under. No. 4, Webb Simpson opens at 6-under and No. 5 Collin Morikawa will start at 5-under.

After the top five players, the rest of the field is grouped in bunches of five and assigned the same score based on the FedEx Cup Standings. For example, five players (No. 6 through 10), will start at 4-under while the next five will open at 3-under until we get to the finale five players (No. 26-30), who will open at even par. Clearly, this format makes winning far more difficult for players at the lower end of the rankings. Now, let’s take a look at the odds to win.

No. 5 – Xander Schauffele

The 26-tear-old Californian will start at 3-under and a value-packed +2500 pick to win and I thin he deserves some real consideration. Schauffele, currently ranked 14th in the FedEx rankings, has been fantastic all season long in finishing inside the Top-25 in a whopping 15 of the 17 tournaments he’s played in. Yes, he’s yet to find his way into the winner’s circle, but the talented Schauffele is a long-ball hitter that averages 305.6 yards per drive (31st) while also ranking 17th in birdie average (4.18) and seventh in scoring average (69.342). Schauffele comes into this event off consecutive T25 finishes the last two weeks at the Northern Trust and BMW Championship.

No. 4 – Rory McIlroy

12th in the FedEx rankings, the 31-year-old McIlroy won the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions to claim his 18t PGA Tour title while defeating Schauffele in a playoff with a birdie on the first extra hole. While the sweet-swinging Ireland native comes into this event off a T12 finish at the BMW Championship and a disappointing T65 at the Northern Trust, McIlroy also ranks sixth in scoring average (69.229), fourth in driving distance (314.2) and second in eagles (77.5). Maybe it’s me, but I think McIlroy is due for a win and believe he’s offering some great value as a +2500 pick.

No. 3 – Justin Thomas

Third in the FedEx rankings, the 27-year-old Thomas has recorded three wins this season by bringing home the hardware at the CJ Cup@Nine Bridges, the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational on Aug. 2. Thomas has also racked up nine Top-10 finishes this season while ranking third in birdie average (4.53) and fifth in scoring average (69.180). The Kentucky native comes into this event off a T25 at the BMW Championship last week after finishing T49 at the Northern Trust the week prior. Thomas will be motivated and he’ll open just three shots off the lead and that means he’ll have a shot.

No. 2 – Collin Morikawa

Currently fifth in the FedEx standings, the blossoming 23-year-old Californian has six Top-10 finishes and two wins this season, including his first major by taking home the hardware at the PGA Championship last month. Yes, Morikawa missed the cut at the Northern Trust two weeks ago while finishing T20 last week at the BMW Championship, but the young stud is third in eagles (85.5) and 16th in scoring average (69.897). He’ll start five strokes behind Dustin Johnson, but Morikawa is so good, I think he’ll have a legitimate chance.

No. 1 – Dustin Johnson

The world No. 1 has a pair of wins this year at the Travelers Championship and the Northern trust two weeks ago and nearly claimed back-to-back wins by finishing second to Jon Rahm at last week’s BMW Championship. The 36-year-old Californian ranks 11t in driving distance (310.4), first in eagles (57.9), ninth in birdie average (4.29) and eighth in scoring average (69.411). Johnson has finished T12 or better in each of his last four tournaments and has a leg up on everyone else in this star-studded event, making the still major-less star my top pick to win the 2020 PGA Tour Championship.

Tiger most definitely deserves some attention. He won the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage. The way he struck the ball at Augusta in the Masters means he could end up in the final pairing on Sunday.

Brooks Koepka’s getting the most love. Koepka could have forced a playoff at the Masters if he had made a key putt on the 72^nd hole. He will be motivated, but it takes more than motivation. Although Koepka has the length on his drives to traverse Bethpage, he’s not the pick among the favorites.

It might be time for Rory McIlroy to win another major. McIlroy finished twenty-first at Augusta National. He bounced back with an eighth place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship. Rory’s average drive is 314. He’s got a great shot among the favorites to win this week.

Is there a non-favorite golfer at +3300 odds or less that can beat the favorites?

Rickie Fowler played great at the last major event at Bethpage, the 2016 The Barclay’s Open. He shot a -6. That was 3 strokes off winner Patrick Reed. Not only that, but Fowler’s struck the ball well. He finished ninth at the Masters. In his last tournament played, the Wells Fargo Championship, he finished fourth.

Rickie’s been getting off to slow starts. If he can shoot under par on Thursday and Friday, he’ll be in a position to win.

What golfers between +3300 and +6000 or l can win the 2019 PGA Championship?

We must take Adam Scott at +5500 seriously. Scott shot a -7 at the 2016 The Barclay’s, only 2 strokes off the winner. Scott hasn’t been in great form. He failed to make the cut at the Zurich Open. He did shoot a 69 and 68 in the first two rounds at the Masters, though. If Scott returns to his best form, he will have a chance on Sunday.

Is their golfer not listed that can take home the trophy?

Gary Woodland has a much better shot than his odds indicate. At +7000, we shouldn’t even consider Woodland, right? Not so fast. He had a great tournament the last time a big golf tournament took place at Bethpage. Like Scott at the 2016 The Barclay’s, Woodland shot a -7.

His recent form has been awful. But, what can we expect from a +7000 shot? Woodland’s a good enough golfer to get back on track this week. If he does, he could be in the running for the trophy this weekend.

Before we get to that huge tournament, though, there is still the business of the final major of the season to take care of. The 2017 PGA Championship will tee of this Thursday, August 10 at the Quail Hollow course in Charlotte, North Carolina.

While this is the first time that a major will be held at this course, it is one that is familiar to many of the golfers taking part, as this is the course that has been hosting the Wells Fargo Championship for the past few years. While that may seem to play into the favor of the players who have won here in the past, which includes one of the tournament favorites, it is worth noting that there have been some changes made to the course to make it that much tougher. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the betting odds favorites for the 2017 PGA Championship, and let’s also make a prediction for the winner.

This is a tournament that has always gone well for the Irishman, and he has won it twice in the last 5 years. There is more than just another major opportunity on the line for Spieth at this event, as a win at Quail Hollow would give him a career Grand Slam. There is certainly no golfer hotter than Spieth right now, as he has won 2 of his last 3 tournaments, which included a win at the British Open. This is a course that rewards length and accuracy, both of which Spieth has in spades. He is the man to be in Charlotte, and I believe he will be the golfer who comes away with the win on Sunday.

Dustin Johnson (+800)

One of the questions being asked on the tour right now is how long Johnson can remain the number 1 golfer in the world with Spieth playing as well as he is. I would suggest that it won’t be long at all, especially since Johnson is not playing particularly good golf at the moment. He may be one of the favorites here, but I am taking Dustin Johnson to finish outside of the top 10 in a move that may come back to bit me in a big way.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1500)

This is a golfer who has quietly cracked the top 3 in the world, and he has done so by playing consistently good gold. He is coming off a win at the Bridgestone last weekend, which he won in considerable style with a 61 in the final round on Sunday. Matsuyama has performed well at each of the three majors this season, and there is nothing to suggest that he can’t put in a solid performance here. I like him to be among the leaders on the final day, and would not be surprised to see a top 5 finish.

Rickie Fowler (+1500)

This is another player who has proven that he can handle the pressure of the majors, finishing in the top 25 in all 3 majors so far this year. His best performance came at the US Open, where he tied for 5th. Fowler has 1 tour win under his belt this season, but always manages to be at or near the top of the leaderboard in every tournament. Definitely a player to watch.

With the fourth and final major of the year set to get underway on Thursday, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, the big question that golf enthusiasts need answered heading into the 2017 PGA Championship is whether or not there will be four different winners for each major this year.

Jordan Spieth won the British Open in July and is the co-favorite to win the 2017 PGA Championship to potentially complete a career slam, but I’ve got some reservations to be honest about it. Spieth is ‘crazy gifted’ but he’s also made the routine turn into a drama-filled finish far too often which is why I believe he’s not going to bag this title.

While I expect Spieth to win many more majors before he’s done, the next time I hear a comparison to Tiger Woods, I’m just going to smack somebody (and I’m pretty small and weak, so please, just stop it)!

All attempts at humor aside, Spieth will have a chance, but he’s not my pick to win it all, even though a victory would put him in the elite company of legends like Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen as the lone golfers that have completed a career Grand Slam by winning all four majors.

Rory McIlroy 7/1

Rory McIlroy is as talented as any golfer on the planet, but he’s not the most mentally strong golfer on the planet which is why, despite his co-favorite status, I don’t like him to bag this year’s PGA Championship title. McIlroy has two PGA Championship titles (2012, 2014), but he has yet to record a win this season, although he does have a trio of fourth place finishes with one of those coming at the British Open last month. Right now, I’m thinking McIlroy will use his solid, but not overly impressive 2017 campaign as serious motivation to win at least one major next year!

Dustin Johnson 10/1

For me, Dustin Johnson is the pick to win this year’s PGA championship. The World No. 1 leads the PGA Tour in driving distance and is third in greens in regulation (70.5%), not to mention 11th in eagles per hole (118.3), 16th in birdie average (3.98) and 10th in scoring (69.843). After failing to win one of the three majors so far this year, Johnson just feels like he’s due to me. Besides, he’s the genuine article!

Rickie Fowler 14/1

If you’re like me and you’re sick and tired of seeing Fowler end up as a bridesmaid and not the actual bride, then you should know he’s got a good chance to bag this year’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. If you didn’t know this is the place where Fowler got his first professional win way back in 2012 and he also tied for fourth place at last year’s PGA Championship.

Maybe it’s me, but Rickie Fowler just looks like a guy that’s due for a big, career-altering win, although I guess you could say that’s been the case for a few years now. By the way, Fowler has four top 10 finishes in his last six events and led the U.S. Open for most of the first few rounds this year before fading.

Jason Day 25/1

Did you know that Jason Day is one of only three golfers to finish in the top 10 in at least three of the past six PGA Championships? That alone says he’ll have a legitimate shot to get the win as a value-packed 25/1 pick. While Day has only played Quail Hollow once in the last five years, he never shot more than a 70 when he did.

Matt Kuchar 50/1

I swear, if I pick Kuchar to win one more major this year – and he doesn’t – I’m going to have a nervous breakdown!

All jokes aside, Kuchar has finished inside the top 15 at all three majors so far this year, meaning he’ll have a really good shot and is offering a bunch of value as a whopping 50/1 pick.
