With time winding down on the MotoGP season, there are 4 riders who have amassed over 300 points, and while it has been a fantastic season for each of them, the reality now is that we are looking at a 2-horse race for the World Championship.
This weekend, we are off to Australia for the Qatar Airways Motorcycle Grand Prix, which is the first of the four remaining races of the season.

My Analysis of the Grand Prix of Australia
The top 2 are currently separated by just 10 points, with both men seeming to take turns winning each race.
Only one of them can win it all, and this race could well set the tone for what comes over the final month of the season.
With all of that said, let’s take a look at the current top 4.

Jorge Martin
2023 proved to be a breakout season for Martin, who eventually had to settle for 2nd overall after finishing 9th the prior year.
It was always going to be interesting to see whether that strong season was a one off or a sign that he was ready to make a challenge for a championship.
It turns out that the latter is true, as he is currently sitting in the #1 spot, albeit just 10 points ahead of the defending champion.
He has maintained his cool brilliantly coming down the stretch, finishing either 1st or 2nd in 6 of the last 7 races.
Last season, Martin finished 5th in Australia, but I think we can expect much better this weekend, with a top 3 finish likely, and perhaps even a win.
^Francesco Bagnaia
When you win back-to-back World Championships, you make it very clear that you know what it takes to win.
Bagnaia came into this season looking for his 3rd straight title and given that he is just 10 points back with 4 races remaining, it is now obvious that he is not giving up that championship without a fight.
He has been catchup for a minute now, but his win in the most recent race in Japan edged him a little closer to the top spot.
He now heads to Australia, where he finished 2nd last season and will once again be in the mix.
^Enea Bastianini
Mathematics would suggest that the next two riders are still in the hunt, but realistically, it is the top 2 who are going to be battling it out for the World Championship.
Still, Bastianini will be looking to finish the season strong and potentially act as the spoiler for one of the riders sitting above him right now.
Bastianini already has a couple of wins under his belt this season, so he does know how to get those checkered flags.
Australia has not been kind to him, though, so perhaps top 3 or 5 is the high bat here.
^Marc Marquez
When his career is over, Marquez will absolutely go down as one of the best ever, but he is not quite ready to hang up the helmet.
Marquez has had injury issues slowing him down for the last couple of years, so it has been good to see him back winning races and, for a minute at least, being part of the championship conversation.
He is going to come up short, but he could also still win in the closing weeks.

With just 5 races remaining in the 2023 MotoGP season, the race for the championship remains tight, although the current leader helped his cause with a win in Indonesia, which we will get into in just a moment. While 5 races are not a lot when you look at the entire season, it is certainly more than enough time for a rider to come from behind and steal the crown from the defending champion, but that can only happen if said champion falters, which does not appear to be happening right now. Let’s take a look at the MotoGP odds of the current top 4.
Odds to Win MotoGP Australia | |
---|---|
Francesco Bagnaia | -131 |
Jorge Martin | +101 |
Marco Bezzecchi | +3600 |
Brad Binder | +36000 |
Aleix Espargaro | +125000 |
Johann Zarco | +200000 |
Maverick Vinales | +300000 |
Jack Miller | +300000 |
Alex Marquez | +300000 |
Luca Marini | +300000 |
Fabio Quartararo | +300000 |
Francesco Bagnaia
After a bit of a rough stretch, Bagnaia, who is the defending MotoGP champion, got back on track in a big way with a win in Indonesia. That victory gave him some breathing space at the top, but while he did increase his lead to 18 points, that is by no means an insurmountable margin. You would think, though, that a couple of more wins in the final weeks of the season might be enough for Bagnaia to secure the repeat, but will he get one of those wins in Australia? He had a solid enough race on the Aussie track last season, nabbing a podium finish, and I would not be surprised to see more of the same this time around.

Jorge Martin
With a 3-race run that saw him pick up a pair of wins and a 2nd place finish, it looked as though Martin was about to take a serious run at the lead in the championship battle. His charge came to an abrupt halt in Indonesia, where he was forced to retire, which meant zero points picked up, which is not something that can happen at this late stage of the season, especially when it comes at the same time as the leader picking up another win. Martin will be looking to resume the charge this weekend, but he will need to be better than his 7th place finish in Australia last year.

Marco Bezzecchi
With time running out, the current standings would now suggest that we are looking at a 2-horse race for the World Championship. That is not good news for Bezzecchi, who is currently sitting in 3rd overall, but the reality is that a 63-point gap with just 5 races to go seems like a bridge too wide to cross. He has been in the top 5, including 1 win, over the last 3 races, and since he also finished top 5 in Australia last season, I would expect that run to continue this weekend.

Brad Binder
The top 4 as it stands now is the same as last week, with the point totals being the only thing that changed. At this point, Binder looks to be a lock for the #4 spot, as there seems to be little chance of him moving up or down, unless something really wild happens over the next 5 races. He was 10th in Australia last year, and I believe that a top 5 finish would be the best he could hope for in this race.
