2023 Australian Open Odds Update: Top Weekend Matchups to Bet On 3rd Round | ATP & WTA Odds & Picks

The first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, is well underway, with several upsets in both the men’s and women’s draw. Most notably, Rafael Nadal was ousted from the tournament via a second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald. Even more shocking, Nadal lost in straight sets.

Nadal’s longtime rival, Novak Djokovic, is back in Australia after missing last year’s tournament and is into the third round, where he’s due to face Gregor Dmitrov at Rod Laver Arena around 4 a.m. EST tomorrow.

While there have been some upsets in the women’s draw, tournament favorite Iga Swiatek is cruising along as expected. The world No. 1 has yet to drop a set and won her third-round match on Thursday 6-0, 6-1 against Cristina Bucsa. Swiatek won 85 percent of points on her first serve. She’ll meet 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina in a highly-anticipated fourth-round match.

Let’s take a look at some of the Australian Open Betting Lines for this weekend’s matches.

Jenson Brooksby (+111) vs. Tommy Paul (-141)

It’s an all-American matchup on Friday night (Saturday morning in Australia) as Jenson Brooksby meets Tommy Paul. Brooksby is a surprise third-round participant after scoring a 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-2 victory over No. 2 seed Casper Ruud. Paul, meanwhile, advanced following a five-set victory in the second round over Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Both players are similarly ranked, with Brooksby at No. 39 and Paul at No. 35. Brooksby has the advantage of youth and was on the court for less time in his second-round match. Paul, however, has won the only meeting between the two players at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati last year. Both players are at their best on the hard court, but Brooksby should have the emotional advantage after scoring perhaps the biggest win of his career.

Take Brooksby (+111) for the win, but expect at least a four-set match. The over on total games (38.5) is paying out -116.

Andy Murray (+265) vs. Roberto Bautista Agut (-359)

Andy Murray is the sentimental pick here. The 35-year-old has been close to retirement for a few years now and is in fact, playing with an artificial hip. It’s remarkable that he’s into the third round, especially after dropping the first two sets in each of his two prior matches. It’ll be an even better story if he can move into the fourth round.

However, that seems very unlikely at this point. While it’s not a great value bet, consider Bautista Agut a sure thing to win this match. The line may also go down, considering Murray is the popular pick. Murray has been on the court for more than 10 hours through just two matches, while Bautista Agut has played fewer than five hours.

Barbora Krejcikova (+150) vs. Jessica Pegula (-211)

If you’re looking to back an underdog this weekend, Barbora Krejcikova is a great option to win against Jessica Pegula. While Pegula is ranked 20 spots higher (No. 3 to 23), the two players have yet to play on the WTA Tour. Pegula has never won a Grand Slam, while Krejcikova is a proven winner who won the 2021 French Open.

Krejcikova has lost just 14 games in her first three matches at the Australian Open. Pegula has only lost 11 games, but has faced weaker competition.

The weather finally cooperated on Day 4 of the Australian Open and more top seeds went out, following Rafael Nadal out of the first Grand Slam of the season. On the men’s side, No. 2 Casper Ruud lost as did No. 23 Diego Schwartzman. The women’s draw lost No. 8 Daria Kasatkina, No. 9 Veronika Kudermetova, and four other players seeded between 14 and 18.

One storyline to keep an eye on is the early success of American players, especially in the men’s draw. No American male has won a slam since Andy Roddick at the 2001 U.S. Open but eight American men have already secured a 3rd round berth with four others still alive in round two. There are six American women also in the third round, a number that could grow to eight by the end of Day 4.

Let’s take a look at some of the Australian Open Betting Odds for matches currently scheduled for Day 5, including three of the top Americans in action.

Frances Tiafoe -114

This is one of two all-seeded matchups in the top section of the draw for Day 5, the section now opened up by the loss from No. 1 Rafael Nadal. Frances Tiafoe is seeded 16 and Karen Khachanov is seeded 18th and both made the semifinals of the 2022 U.S. Open. Khachanov has won both of their previous matchups, on grass at Wimbledon.

Khachanov has never made the second week of the Australian Open, losing in the 3rd round each of the last four years. Tiafoe made a quarterfinals run in 2019 at Melbourne Park, his only time past the second round at this slam.

This match comes down to baseline rallies. Khachanov wants shorter points and Tiafoe, who is among the best-conditioned players on tour, will go for long rallies and a long match. Both will be aggressive but Tiafoe is unbeaten in 2023, including some big United Cup wins, and he’s primed for a big win here.

Danielle Collins +113

American Danielle Collins is the No. 13 seed, and she faces No. 22 Elena Rybakina in the 3rd round match. Collins had to dig deep in her last match to beat Karolina Muchova 7-6 in the third set. She’s had major success at Melbourne Park over her career, with two trips to the semifinals in the last four years and a loss in last year’s final.

Rybakina beat Collins earlier this month in a three-set match at the Adelaide International. They are tied 1-1 in their career head-to-head. Collins can win this match by having success in her return game, as Rybakina had just four aces in her last match and didn’t face a break point against a lesser opponent.

Madison Keys +114

This is a tough matchup for No. 10 Madison Keys, who is 0-3 in her career, against No. 24 Victoria Azarenka. They played a 3-set match in October in Guadalajara, with Azarenka taking the final set 6-1 in the round of 16. The winner of this match will likely face No. 6 Maria Sakkari with a round of 16 berth on the line.

Keys made the semifinals last year at the Australian Open, and she is 5-2 in the 3rd round in her career at Melbourne Park. Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion (2012 & 2013) and has won nine straight 3rd round matches at this slam. This match should go three sets on Rod Laver Arena, and Keys is worth a bet as the underdog (+114) to Azarenka’s -150.

Nadal continues his unbeaten season with that win, which is exciting news, knowing that he had to cut short his 2021 campaign with a foot injury. However, despite all the issues the Spaniard had to deal with in 2021, he looks in prime form to win his second Australian Open and first since 2009.

Priced as the third favorite on the 2022 Australian Open outright markets, behind Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, Nadal is definitely a man to watch as we get deeper into the tournament. And it will be interesting to see how he does in R3.

Nadal’s next opponent is world no.30 Karen Khachanov, who Nadal last met in December 2019 and won in straight sets. Interestingly, Nadal has yet to lose against Karen Khachanov across eight head-to-head meetings and has won all matches, but one (3-1 in 2018) in straight sets.

Another Win For Zverev

On Wednesday, Alexander Zverev locked in his second straight-set win of the tournament when he made it past world no.89 John Millman. As one of the main favorites to compete for the 2022 Australian Open title, Zverev proved once again why he should not be overlooked and made another match look very easy.

Admittedly, Millman took four points in the first two sets, but it never looked like Zverev was not in full control. The German won the series with 6-4, 6-4. 6-0.

Still, playing close sets seems to be Zverev’s specialty this tournament, seeing how there were two tiebreakers in his R1 clash with Daniel Altmaier. The world no.87 made Zverev work hard for the 3-0 win, forcing the current world no.3 to tiebreakers in the first and third set.

Nevertheless, Zverev pulled through in both fixtures and now heads into R3 with two clean victories behind him. Now he needs to get ready for world no.124 Radu Albot, who stunned Aleksandar Vukic (3-0) on Wednesday and reached his career-first R3 in Australia.

Unfortunately, if the ATP betting odds are to be trusted, this could be the end of the road for Albot, who enters the match priced as high as +1400. Still, there is a reason to feel optimistic about the underdog.

In their only head-to-head meeting, in the 2019 U.S. Open, Albot forced Zverev to five sets (2-3), and with the form he has been showing, it’s not outside of the realms of possibility that the 32-year-old Moldavian tennis star can make life a bit tougher for Zverev.

The two will go at it on Friday, at 11:00 a.m. local time (AEDT).

Rafael Nadal is now set to advance into R4 for the sixth consecutive time. Last year he reached QF, as he did a year prior, in 2020.

Meanwhile, Khachanov ended his 2022 Australian Open campaign in R3, matching his career-best finish from 2020 and 2019. Last year, he got eliminated by Nick Kyrigos, who then lost to Rafael Nadal in R4.

Zverev Takes Down Albot

The Olympic tennis champion blasted into the Australian Open last 16 on Friday, with a convincing performance against world no.124, Radu Albot, who he beat with 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in 1hr 57 min. Although a strong performance from Alexander Zverev, the outcome was hardly shocking.

The German tennis star has been in phenomenal form so far this tournament, having picked up three straightforward wins, and is now only one step away from booking a quarter-finals bout with the 20-time Grand Slam champions, Rafael Nadal.

The world no.3 has already made it past Daniel Altmaier (7-6, 6-1, 7-6), John Millman (6-4, 6-4, 6-0), and has now added another clean sweep victory against Albot with 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. With that, Zverev’s record from his last ten outings shows eight wins and only two losses – against Medvedev in Turin and Auger-Aliassime in the ATP Cup two weeks back.

By making it into the fourth round of the Australian Open, Zverev looks set to make another deep run in Melbourne, where he reached the semi-finals in 2020 and QF in 2021. However, he still needs to make it past his R4 opponent, world no. 14, Denis Shapovalov.

Shapovalov and Zverev will clash on Sunday, January 23, at 11:00 local time (AEDT), for the first time since February 2021, when Zverev won 2-1 in the ATP Cup.
