Truex got the win in Charlotte last weekend after surviving two late restarts, with the last one coming in overtime, to win for a series-best six times this season, the second time at Charlotte and the 13th time in his career. “We qualified horribly, and I was mad about it,” said Truex, who started 17th instead of his customary position on or near the front row. (Crew chief) Cole (Pearn) was mad about it and in 20 minutes were like ‘All right, I think this is where we went wrong.’ And he’s like ‘Yeah, that’s where we went wrong. We screwed up, we’ll get them Sunday.’” Truex has 3,106 points to lead the pack. Kyle Larson is second with 3,072. Kevin Harvick is third with 3,069 points. Chase Elliott is fourth with 3,059 points. Denny Hamlin is fifth with 3,056 points. Kyle Busch is sixth with 3,055 points. Jimmie Johnson is seventh with 3,051 points. Jamie McMurray is eighth with 3,044 points. Ironically, Busch only has one win at Talladega in his career and that took place way back in 2008. retiring fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. is looking for his seventh career win at Talladega with his legendary dad, Dale Sr. owning the all-time career mark with 10 wins. Earnhardt Jr.’s last win at Talladega came in 2015 in the spring race. Denny Hamlin is a good long shot selection seeing as how he won the spring race at Talladega in 2014. Hamlin also won the 2016 Daytona 500.
