2023 Belmont Stakes Betting Predictions: Entry List of Who’s In, Out and a Maybe

The 2023 Belmont Stakes happens in two days. It’s time to get serious. Todd Pletcher’s tandem of Forte and Tapit Trice are the favorites followed by Brad Cox trained Angel of Empire.

Belmont Stakes Field Profiles

1. Tapit Shoes +2000

Sire Tapit has produced four Belmont Stakes winners. What makes Tapit Shoes dangerous is his early speed. If the Brad Cox trained runner gets the lead over National Treasure, for sure the longshot will have enough in the tank as they turn for home.

2. Tapit Trice +300

Like Tapit Shoes, Tapit Trice calls Tapit dad. Unlike Tapit Shoes, which ran well in the last, Tapit Trice’s Kentucky Derby was a disaster. Although the second choice in the betting, the Todd Pletcher trainee must step it up big time to win the Belmont on Saturday.

3. Arcangelo +800

Arcangelo closed into a seriously slow pace in the Grade 3 Peter Pan to get by a talented front runner in Bishops Bay. The Jen Antonucci trained runner is a serious contender. Odds anywhere close to 8-to-1 makes this runner an overlay.

4. National Treasure +500

Johnny V. put National Treasure on the lead in the Preakness and jockey and horse never looked back. The same set up won’t happen in the Belmont because Tapit Shoes, Forte, and Hit Show should be close to the pace. The +500 are underlay odds.

5. Il Miracolo +3000

Il Miracolo is hopelessly overmatched. The longest shot on the board could run the best race of its life and Il Miracolo would still fail to finish in the top four. Demand +5000 odds if you’re willing to take a bite.

6. Forte +250

The record is spectacular, the trainer exceptional, and the horse is as talented as they get. But at +250, the 2022 two-year-old horse of the year is a play against to win. Forte will have stood in his barn for 10 weeks when he gallops to the starting gate for the Belmont. A 10-week gap between races is a long time. Winning a 1 ½ mile race after a 10-week gap takes a gargantuan effort.

7. Hit Show +1000

Hit Show was closest to the ridiculous pace in the Kentucky Derby and finished the best. The Cox runner crossed the finish line fifth after running closest to the pace among the top five finishers. For sure, Cox will have this guy ready. Consider.

8. Angel of Empire +350

If not for going 7-wide around the final turn under the twin spires, Angel of Empire would have won the Kentucky Derby. Among the favorites, this one is the top choice. The short freshening, Angel skipped the Preakness, should only aid his monster closing kick.

9. Red Route One +1500

If Steve Asmussen has gotten this dude to relax, he was a mess in the Preakness, there’s a chance Red Route One pulls off a big time upset. The horse has talent and his closing kick, when he’s nice and relaxed and galloping along near the rear of the pack, is almost as good as Angel of Empire’s and Arcangelo’s.
