WNBA Week 9 Picks: Must-Watch Matchups with Betting Analysis

We are now at the midway point of the WNBA season, and you have to say that the battle for playoff spots looks very good at the moment.

It looks like we are going to have a real dogfight for the #1 seed, as we have a pair of teams tied for first and a couple more very much within striking distance.

My Analysis

Down at the cut line, things are tight there, too, although we are beginning to see a couple of teams drift too far away from the line for comfort.

It is going to be fun to watch and see how this all plays out in the second half of the season.

For now, we are simply focusing on the week ahead, so let’s take a look at the games we like this week to bet on WNBA.

Minnesota Lynx at LA Sparks

Tuesday, July 9, 2024, 10:00 PM | It has already been a good season for the Minnesota Lynx, as they won the Commissioner’s Cup, which is an in-season tournament in the WNBA.

They are one of the teams still in the hunt for the #1 seed, sitting in 3rd overall, just 2 games out of the top spot.

The Lynx have been great at home but beatable on the road, where they are 5-4.

The road trip will take them to LA to face the Sparks, who are just 5-16 this season and in real danger of losing touch with the playoff race.

They have just 1 win in their last 10 games.

New York Liberty at Connecticut Sun

Wednesday, July 10, 2024, 11:00 AM | This is absolutely the biggest game of the week, as these two teams enter the new week tied for the top spot in the WNBA.

Both are sitting at 17-4, and while the Liberty have the best record over the last 10 games at 8-2, it is the Sun who are in better recent form, coming into this one having won each of their last 3 games.

The Liberty won the earlier meeting on the road this season and given that they are 10-1 at home this season, they look a good bet to make it a repeat win over the Sun.

Las Vegas Aces at Seattle Storm

Wednesday, July 10, 2024, 3:00 PM | This is another big matchup, with these teams sitting in the #4 and #5 spots and separated by just a half game.

The Aces are the team in the #5 spot at the moment, but they are also on a great run of form, winning 8 of their last 10 games.

These teams have split the opening 2 games of the series, both of which were played in Sin City.

The Aces now need to go on the road, where they are 5-3 this season. The Storm closed out last week with a win and are now 7-3 in their last 10 games.

They are an impressive 9-2 in their own building.

Phoenix Mercury at Indiana Fever

Friday, July 12, 2024, 7:30 PM, ION | Our final game for this week is a matchup between a pair of teams who are a little too close to the cut line for comfort.

The Mercury are 11-10 this season and look to be somewhat comfortable on the #6 spot in the standings, 2 ½ games up on the Indiana Fever.

Things are not as comfortable for the Fever, who are in the #7 spot and just a game up on the team sitting in 9th.

It was the Fever who won the earlier meeting with the Mercury this season.

WNBA Week 9 | June 26 – July 2, 2023

New York Liberty vs Connecticut Sun

Mohegan Sun Arena Uncasville, CT
Tuesday, Jun 27, 2023 at 7:00 pm EDT
NBC Sports Boston, YES

This week of championship litmus tests in the WNBA will begin in Connecticut, as the Connecticut Sun host the New York Liberty. The Sun enter this week in second place in the WNBA standings, while the Liberty are in third place. The winner of this game will state their intent to challenge the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA Finals later this year.

For Connecticut, this game and their game against the Aces later in the week will be tougher than usual. The Sun announced over the weekend that star center Brionna Jones will miss the rest of the season with an Achilles injury.

Without her, the Sun will not be able to generate easy paint points as easily against a Liberty team that prefers to play on the perimeter on both ends of the floor.

New York Liberty vs Las Vegas Aces

Silver State Sports & Entertainment Network, YES

A wild week will get even more interesting for the Liberty on Thursday night as they take on the Las Vegas Aces in Vegas. The Aces have won five games in a row since suffering their first loss of the season in Connecticut against the Sun. Here, the Aces will look to look to make a championship-level statement against the Liberty in their first meeting of the season.

In this game, the key will be who will win the battle of superstars between Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson. These teams are evenly matched on paper, but the All-Star who has a better performance could carry their team to a huge victory here.

Connecticut Sun vs Las Vegas Aces

Michelob ULTRA Arena Las Vegas, NV
Saturday, Jul 1, 2023 at 10:00 pm EDT

The triple-threat match for the WNBA title will see another chapter written on Saturday when the Connecticut Sun visit the Las Vegas Aces. These teams split their previous two meetings this season, with those games taking place in Connecticut. But things could be entirely different in this contest, as the absence of Brionna Jones will loom large.

Jones averaged 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in the two-game series against the Aces earlier in the season. Without her, the Sun will need to figure out a way to compete on the glass to avoid getting completely run over by the red-hot Aces.

Sunday: Washington Mystics vs Dallas Wings

In an exciting matchup that does not feature the Aces, Liberty, or Sun, Sunday will feature what should be a thriller between the Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings. This game features two of the top stars in the league in Washington’s Elena Delle Donne and Dallas’ Arike Ogunbowale. But there is so much more to like about this matchup.

Specifically, the battle on the interior between these teams should be appointment viewing. Dallas is loaded on the inside, with Teaira McCowan back to join Natasha Howard, Satou Sabally, and Kalani Brown. But the Mystics have the tenacious Shakira Austin, who has been able to punch above her proverbial weight in matchups like this one all season long.
