Betting the Top Stakes Races for the Weekend

In less than a month, the best horses in the world descend upon Del Mar Racetrack in Southern California for the Breeders’ Cup, the annual 2-day racing festival.

This year, even though he’s never run on dirt, Aidan O’Brien trained City of Joy is the future book favorite to win the BC Classic.

Check out horse racing odds for the Classic along with Breeders’ Cup news.

Writer’s Picks on the Top Skates Happenning this Weekend

Aidan O’Brien trained City of Troy attracting more action than Todd Pletcher’s Fierceness

Fierceness, the Todd Pletcher trained winner of the Travers Stakes is the second choice to O’Brien’s turf monster.

City of Troy has won three straight Grade 1 events. Overall, the O’Brien beast is 5-of-6 in the winner’s circle.

The big question regarding City of Troy is whether he can handle dirt. Breeding suggests it won’t be an issue.

In fact, City of Troy might be better on dirt because Triple Crown winner Justify is sire.

As far as Fierceness is concerned, the Pletcher runner showed he can rate in the Travers.

However, he’s tough to back to win because horses that win at Saratoga don’t always transfer their form.

Also, Fierceness is likely to be near a wicked pace in the Classic, which is another reason bettors are siding with City of Troy at this point.

Forever Young and Sierra Leone are the only other two runners offering less than +1000 to win the Classic

It makes sense why Forever Young would offer less than +1000 odds.

The Japanese superstar hasn’t run since finishing third in the Kentucky Derby.

But although Forever Young will try the Classic after a massive layoff, he’s proven capable.

It doesn’t make as much sense why Sierra Leone is at +900. 9-to-1 odds aren’t bad but Leone hasn’t won since taking home the Blue Grass Stakes.

In the Travers, the Chad Brown trainee finished third behind Fierceness and Thorpedo Anna.

Back Forever Young over Sierra Leone if you’re deciding between the two.

Thorpedo Anna is the chalk over Idiomatic to win the Distaff

Speaking of Thorpedo Anna, she’s the favorite over 2023 Distaff winner Idiomatic.

The Brad Cox trained 5 year old mare bounced into top form in her last when sinning the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes.

Thorpedo Anna is as quality as it gets. But the Kenny McPeek runner faces a tough challenge to beat Idiomatic.

At the current odds, Idiomatic offers a better price than Thorpedo Anna, the defending champ gets the nod.

National Treasure and Saudi Crown should duke it out in the Dirt Mile

If neither National Treasure nor Saudi Crown go in the Classic and both run in the BC Dirt Mile, we should expect an excellent race.

National Treasure won the Pegasus World Cup and Metropolitan this year.

Saudi Crown won a soft stakes race at Ellis Park. Crown may or may not run in the dirt mile.

Bob Baffert, National Treasure’s trainer, is likely place his horse in the Dirt Mile because 1 1/8 miles appears to be National Treasure’s distance limit.

Baffert runners offering overlay odds to win the Juvenile

Bob Baffert is likely to enter three runners into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Right now, all three offer overlay odds.

Gaming is at +600. Citizen Bull and Getaway Car are both at +1600. All three will have a chance to win the Juvenile.

Getaway Car finished second to Citizen Bull in the Grade 1 American Pharoah. Gaming won the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity.

The odds make all three Baffert horses playable.

Top Breeders’ Cup Prep Races this Summer

Angel of Empire and Tapit Trice return in the Grade 1 Haskell on July 22. Both project to start in the Travers Stakes on August 26. Arcangelo, the impressive Belmont winner, Mage, the Derby winner, and Forte will also run in the Mid-Summer Derby.

As far as older horses are concerned, the Jockey Club Gold Cup at the Spa and the Pacific Classic at Del Mar are the highlight events. It’s too early to know which horses will run in either. Cody’s Wish may go in the JC Gold Cup.

Bob Baffert could run three or four in the Pacific Classic. Taiba is a strong possibility. So are Country Grammar, Defunded, and maybe one of Bob’s 3-year-olds like Arabian Knight.

Also, we must pay attention to graded grass races at Saratoga. Summer time is when Aidan O’Brien and other top European trainers send their runners to the U.S.

No Older Horse on Flightline’s Level

Last year, Flightline dominated the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Flightline retired after winning the Classic and didn’t run in 2023.

No horse, neither a 3-year-old or an older equine, has emerged that’s close to Flightline’s level. Because of that, Forte and Arcangelo, a pair of 3-year-olds, are two of the top choices, Cody’s Wish is the top choice to win the 2023 BC Classic.

Travers Stakes Could End Up Producing the Breeders’ Cup Classic Chalk

If Forte or Arcangelo win the Travers Stakes, they could end up the Breeders’ Cup Classic chalk. Right now, odds are based on non-summer events.

So a horse like Taiba will become a co-favorite with Cody’s Wish if Taiba wins the Pacific Classic. Still, the buzz is deafening surrounding Arcangelo and Forte.

Arcangelo, especially, has looked great in the mornings. If the Belmont Stakes winner improves at all, he could develop into a Flightline type monster. He won’t be as good as Flightline, but he’ll be close.

Keep Arcangelo on your radar. If the Jenna Antonucci runner does something special in the Travers Stakes, he could be worth the low future odds to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
